Stayed for 1 night at the Shangri La and chose it based on trip adivsor reviews, plus I am a fan of the Shangri La hotels in general. Anyway, had a club level room on the 44th floor.
Liked: Quiet, clean, nice room, good breakfast on the club level, nice health club facilites and good spa, decent happy hour and appetizers on club level, late check out- no problem.
Disliked: Location- it's in the middle of nowhere, staff's english (other than front desk) was severely lacking for a 5 star hotel, had to wear a swim cap in the pool even though we promised not to put our head under water.
Bottom line- if you are in this particular area of Suzhou on business, this is a good choice but if you come to visit the gardens or any other tourist destination pick somewhere with a better location.
As the guidebooks indicate, Suzhou is today a rapidly developing industrial conurbation with, at it's heart, the UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising a number of 'gardens'. Well, the Shangri La is NOT near these gardens or the railway station which is where many visitors will arrive.
I stayed on the 44th floor (of 51) and this is one that comprised the Horizon Club Executive level. Yes, the bedroom was very large and provided very high ceilings and a sense of luxury but was it really worth 1,706 RMb, i.e. £170 at the prevailing rate of exchange? I am somewhat skeptical.
Given the background to the development of the Shangri La Hotel group, it was disappointing to find that the novel by James Hilton The Lost Horizon, provided in the bedrooms a la Gideon's Bible, was not for sale in the small bookshop. Upon asking if the room copy could be purchased, I was amazed to be told 'yes, at £15'. On the positive side, all employees encountered were very pleasant and most had a good command of English.
I attended a function that was being held at the Shangri-La in mid June, 2008. We hired a car from the hotel to pick us up from the PuDong Airport in Shanghai and he was waiting for us once we received our luggage. Shortly before arriving at the hotel the driver called ahead and the bellman was waiting with a luggage cart when we arrived. We were immediately taken to our room where the check in process was completed.
I was sharing a room and it wasn't crowded at all. The room and bathroom were both nice sized and well appointed. The beds were comfortable and the hotel even had the buckwheat pillow that I requested before the stay. The view from our room on the 45th floor was of the local amusement park, and had it not been foggy/smoggy/cloudy could've been a great one, but the conditions didn't exactly lend to the view.
We ate at Cafe Soo and Suntory and the food and service was good at both. Club Red, the hotel bar, was outstanding. Johnson, Sara, and the rest of the staff all went out of their way to make me feel at home. In fact, I felt more like a regular here than I do at the bar I frequent at home. There is a duo of younger Chinese girls that sing many American songs, and not too bad either; however, they should stay away from songs like Sweet Home Alabama.
We upgraded to a Horizon Club room which entitled us to free breakfast in the Horizon Club Room which was really good. There was a good selection of breads, pastries, fruit, cereal, and other Chinese dishes. The Horizon upgrade also included the internet service, which you have to pay for in a standard room I believe. Peter, our Horizon Club concierge did an outstanding job and was very informative.
I travel quite a bit and this was the best experience I've had for business travel, and rates as high as some of the leisure travel I've done. I will definitely stay here if I have to go back to Suzhou.
My wife and I have just finished our stay here and we truly had an amazing experience. From the moment we stepped out of the taxi the level of service was outstanding. The staff was always a few steps ahead of us in thinking of ways to make our stay more enjoyable, comfortable and pampered.
Our room was 4504. The view was amazing as was the room. We had a separate sitting room with tv. The bathroom was large and beautiful.
Prior to this stay, one of our favorite hotels was the Peninsula in Bangkok. This hotel far surpassed our already high expectations.
We used the spa, gym facilities, club lounge--all excellent.
We've stayed in some of the best hotels and have never written a review. However, the generosity of the staff compelled us to write this review.
Lily and Katrina of guest relations and Ben, Peter, David and Jack of the Horizon Club are fantastic.
My husband and I recently stayed at the Shangri-la Hotel as part of a tour package with Trafalgar (Uniworld) Tours. The room was magnificent, and the staff was extremely helpful. The hotel featured a wonderful breakfast buffet that included both Western breakfast items as well as Chinese and Japanese selections. I highly recommend this hotel.
Absolutely outstanding. The hotel comprises the top 20 floors of a 50+ storey building. The deluxe room I booked is on the 36th floor, and comprises a large sleeping area, a separate sitting area and a large bathroom.
The sitting area has it's own TV, and 2 floor to ceiling windows. Likewise the bedroom has its own flat screen TV built in to the wall in front of the bed. The room is large, spotless, perfectly decorated.
Importantly the bed is comfortable, and is a pleasure to sleep in. Surprisingly for such a hotel room, the food both in the restaurants and on room service is very reasonably priced.
The fitness centre has a good range of equipment, and the Spa next door is beautiful and reasonably priced (higher than the alternatives outside, but it was worth it).
This is probably the best hotel I have ever stayed in - and I've stayed in a lot, and at 150 USD a night including breakfast, it's certainly the best value. I'd fly back here just for a weekend in the hotel.
This was my 5th stay at the Shangrila, and I have never been disappointed. Like all Shangrilas I have visited, this one is of consistently high quality. I always upgrade to Horizon club with separate check-in, happy hour and breakfast, plus wireless Internet in the spacious and attractively decorated lounge. The staff are friendly, competent, and can easily hold a conversation in English. Rooms are beautiful, including the 'art'. Views from the hotel are very good, as it is the highest building in Suzhou. Being in the industrial area, it is a bit remote, but I do not need to venture out much from the hotel anyways, and there are numerous restaurants and services around. The fitness room is very spacious, clean, and has great facilities. By itself a reason to choose this hotel. The 1st floor lounge has a great vocal/piano duo. The bar "Club Red" is less attractive. On previous visits it was quite noisy and not too customer friendly. Hotel clients are generally middle aged business people. This is not really a family resort. Overall a great choice which makes me feel welcome every time I go.
It was the 2nd time I stayed in this hotel within one year. The service has improved 100%. The staff is very helpful and polite. Internet access as well as any other business facility is of high standard. The gym and pool are brand new and the restaurants are quite good. The rooms are quite large, about 40sqm and very well furnished. The hotel is not located close to the city center but you won't have to pay more than 5 euros by taxi. Overall the best hotel in Suzhou
II've stayed at this hotel many times always with great service and excellent staff. It was just a good as ever with a great room. Although the carpeting was way below Shangri-La standards as in looks and wear. But this is a business hotel not a resort. I demand a good bar to both unwind and meet vendors in and entertain clients. The new Club Red which opened Dec.06 had a rough time getting started. But after getting rid of the young DJ’s playing Boom Boom music (again this is a business hotel with 35-50 year olds) they got in a great salsa band (Fuego) from Colombia who entertained the troops 6 nights a week and where great. For some reason management decided not to extend their contract and the current group does not hold a candle in entertainment value. Then lets get to the bartenders. Management decided to get rid of all the experienced bar tenders and bar management for reason’s I won’t go into but then replaced them with total rookie’s. No people skills and no cocktail knowledge! I had to teach them to make the simplest of drinks. No social skills, no chit chat, no coasters put under your drink just here’s you drink and good luck getting their attention for another round. What are you thinking Shangri-La management!!!! I dropped an average of 700 RMB a night (every night!) there entertaining clients and business associates. Not anymore, goodbye I’ll stay at the Jasmine or Sheraton next month.
I stayed during a week long business trip to Suzhou. Our company has a complex in the Industrial Park District so the hotel is fairly close and very convenient. The hotel is not suited necessarily for the tourist traveler, however on the weekend I found that most sites are within a short and cheap taxi drive (21 RMB = $4 USD). As for the quality and service, my room was great. Clean, plenty of room, all the necessary amenities. All the restaurants are clean and the food is good. Again, please realize this is China - so don't expect the exact same food as the states. For example, I ordered scrambled eggs one morning and what I got was something that resembled runny oatmeal. However, not realizing this is how most Chinese eat their scrambled eggs - next time I'll be sure to order well done! All and all I would highly recommend the Shangri-la and I will be back again.
We went to Suzhou as tourists to see the famous gardens and canals. This hotel is about 20 mins. from all of the attractions in the old part of the city, and is located in the industrial part of town.
We were given an executive level room that was huge and very well appointed, including cocktails and breakfast for about $120. a night. Although we were on the 42 floor, the polution is so bad here you could barely see anything.
The Sheraton is much closer to the tourist sights, but has a reputation for being run down.
We stayed here for three nights in April. It is far better than the Sheraton, which we found quite dated and run down, with below average service. This hotel is flashy, brand new, clean and made for a much more comfortable stay.
The Room. We chose an Executive Suite on the Club Floor. However upon checking in, it was so cramped we opted for a Premier Suite, which was much more spacious and not too much more money. This room was modern, had corner windows (unfortunately with all of the windows you are looking at the ugly industrial area of Suzhou), was very clean and had terrific bedding. All in all, very nice.
The service. Not a highlight, some was good (like the manager) other folks didn't seem to care as much. We were on the Horizon Floor. In the lounge we sometimse had attentive people, other times were were ignored by the staff. We hired a driver for two days. Got a different driver each day who said he knew where he was going and then clearly had no idea and no map (this is pretty common in China).
The food. The breakfast (free) at the Horizon Club was pretty limited and the service minimal. The evening cocktail hour had lovely wine and pastries, but pretty bad appetizers. Overall the American food at the hotel was not good, but the Chinese food was very good. As we stick to Chinese food in China this was not a problem. One exception was the pastries, which were excellent.
Overall, it was a pleasant stay and the staff will improve as time goes on. We will definitely stay here again on our next trip to Suzhou.
Stayed in this hotel for a meeting at their Grand Ballroom for our company. Overall speaking, the hotel is very new and has very good hardware. Room is nice, breakfast and lunch at the Cafe on the 1st floor were nice. However, just like most places in China, the software (service) is not up to standards. During breakfast, I was led up to the smoking section without being asked. I had to request a change to go to non-smoking section. Same thing for my room as I was given a smoking room. Just makes you wonder how can a 5-star hotel commit such mistakes/negligence.
After checking out various hotels in Suzhou, and didn't want to stay at Aster Hotel (looks great from outside, but inside rooms r too run down), I asked my travel agent for a good recommendation...they told me to try Shangri-La Suzhou, and all I can say is WOW!
I paid a bit extra, and they put me up on the 41st floor, with a room size of 60 to 65m2...but the most impressive is how they have French windows on both sides of the room (I had a corner room)...the view in the night time was excellent and romantic!
The one thing I wish I had tried was their breakfast...I was there 2 nights only, and I skipped breakfast one moring, and had room service the 2nd day...so no chance to check out the buffet...
Another great thing about this hotel is that it is 5 minute walk rom the Japanese street of bars and restaurants...and so if you are into the whole Japanese scene, then this is the logical choice for u!
Overall, a great experience and a definite repeat!
