Facilities are ok, but .... We paid a service charge to the CITS (tourism board of China) from another city (Datong) to buy train tickets at this guesthouse, but they ignored this and charged us their full service charge for the ticket. It was only 20 yuan...but still, how cheap can you get???
ALSO--the food is too expensive and you get too little of it!!
we didn´t sleep there as we were staying only the day in pingyao but we were very welcome there and got a lot of help regarding our railway tickets and my lost camera :o(
you need to taste the food there - it´s excellent!
a very outstanding hostel, i can definitely recommend!!
As seen in the lonley planet, but please look at other hostels, yes they speak english, yes their friendly however they'll pursuade you due to lack of availablility etc "you can't get a train out until 'tomorrow'" so stay another night, the 'unlimited' hot water provided 1 out of 3 showers being hot. On the same street you find the same quality, for half the price and with hot water, oh and they may even man the reception to return your deposit...
We were in Pingyao for only one day but wanted a private room to take a hot shower and rest a bit between our back-to-back overnight train rides. When we arrived at 5 am in the morning and after they found out, over a cup of hot tea, that they could not convince us to stay one more night, we were taken to a huge room in a separate location two store front from the main hotel with three large beds and one cummunal bathroom with two shower heads and one toilet. One of the beds is in a room with a door and that's where we were told to rest. We asked for the key to the room and she said there wasn't one. The bathroom was filthy and had no amenities whatsoever. And of course no hot water. We ended up with no hot shower and no rest.
The english speaking owner were able to get us sleeper tickets to Xian even though they were only able to get hard sleepers and ones not in the same "room". We were concerned that the tickets were faxed copies but we got on the train OK. We did have some problem with the sleeper assignment because one of the faxed tickets were hand-corrected to show a different car. We got through OK (we speak some Mandarin - it helped). I supposed this was an isolated incident.
We did not get what we bargained for. I am sure there are better rooms in the hotel. We just didn't get one....while paying the price all the same.
Great location, English speaking staff, nice rooms, seems to be designed to meet the 'western' expectations. Easy to meet up with other travellers, they can organise train tickets, very clean, 2 internet stations, also do acceptable food. The only drawback was that it can get noisy early in the day, after 7am. If noise bothers you you might need to ask for a quiet room. All in all a great place to stay.
The lovely, very friendly couple who runs this hostel make sure you are very well taken care of and you feel very welcomed and relaxed during your stay in this hostel. Furthermore the hostel owners can assist with what ever request you might have. They fixed train tickets, tour to Qiao family house etc. for us very quick. We enjoyed their lovely pancakes and missed them for the rest of our trip in China.... Sander & Elin
