Spent 6 days with wife & 2 year-old in this hotel & have mixed feelings about it.
Firstly, by any standard, the staff are simply excellent. Many can speak English well & if they can't, they will get someone who can.
Within the local context of China, it is a safe haven of security, familiarity & comfort. However, by international standards, this hotel is not 5 star, its a good 4 star.
Why do I think that? Well, there are only 3 restaurants & that includes the coffee lounge on the ground floor which doubles as a bar. The range of drinks there was poor & cocktails were very poor - only 7 to chose from & it was clear the staff were not very familiar with them.
The restaurants all close by 9:30pm and lack atmosphere. Breakfast & international food is served in the revolving restaurant (which does revolve, albeit slowly) but the choices are limited. Sirloin steak was served with hash browns & tomatoes for RMB450 + 15%. Pasta dished were RMB150 + 15% After 3 days, the buffet breakfast became very boring due to the lack of variety.
The hotel boasts lakeviews but the lake forms just 30% of the view, the rest is city & factories. The pollution is so bad that the lake can’t often be seen clearly anyway.
The hotel was clean, neat & tidy. We booked a Delicacy Suit for RMB900 + 15% (I keep mentioning the +15% because when booking the room online & when we got to the hotel, the 15% gov. tax was never mentioned & so came as a big surprise.) but were upgraded to the Executive Suit on the 19th floor. The Suit was 45 square metres but each room was rather small. For example the bedroom had a Queen size bed & there was not a lot of room left to walk around in. It did have a small walk-in wardrobe, a TV / living room & en-suite bathroom. These were acceptable size but not as large as one might expect.
The swimming pool is heated but was still too cold to stay in for very long. The spa looked lifeless & dull. We were planning to use it but when we saw it we changed our minds. A one hour massage costs RMB550.
So, a nice hotel given the city, but one that lacks character or atmosphere
Very comfortable rooms and good service in a superb location (under 10 minutes walk from both the underground station and Xuan Wu lake). The "revolving" restaurant did not revolve, but the quality and variety of the food more than made up for that. The hotel also has a nice heated swimming pool. Great value for money; I would come here again.
This hotel far exceeded expectations. Many Chinese hotels have a nice lobby, but the quality drops off after that. However, the Xuanwu Hotel is well appointed, comfortable, and relatively cheap. Staff members are courteous and speak English well, and the buffet breakfast surpasses comparable buffets at half the price. The Xuanwu Hotel is also in a great location, around the corner from shops and restaurants, and of course the lake.
My first trip to Nanjing. I stayed at the Lakeview Xuanwu Hotel and was surprised by the high standard of service. The front desk staff had great command of English and were very professional in their approach. I was acknowledge by my name everything I walk though the lobby and I felt like I was home. Waking up to the breathtaking scenery of the Xuanwu Lake and Zijin Mount is definitely an added plus to the already impaccable service. Just five minutes from the shopping and entertainment centre, the hotel is ideally located. Definitely a hotel I will return too.
Top class hotel, top class facilities and service, excellent location, have stayed there before and would not consider staying anywhere else in Nanjing. Most reasonable price.
