We stayed there for three days in the beginning of Jan 2009; firstly, the location of the hotel is just in the entrance of Zhongyang street(main shopping and walking street in Harbin). it's walking distance to Zhaolin Park, Church of St. Sophia and Stalin Park. it's perfect location.
The hotel staff can speak basic English; so, it's so easy to communicate with them. Breakfast is quite enough; lots of selections. The only negative thing is the heat of rooms; it's about 30 degree; just keep the window open for a while before sleeping. The room was clean and the service was good.
Except from the hotel, Harbin is wonderful place to see. Especially; Sun island (Tai Yang Dao), Zhaolin Park and Siberian Tiger Park. You can sky, play snow games, see wild tigers, and walk among beautiful ice buildings and snow statues.
Good location. Clean enough. But very, very worn out. Desperately needing a refurbishment.
One major problem. The room temperature. They only provide very hot heater. You can choose to turn it off, but the room is very stuffy. We need to open the window for fresh air. Even then, the room is still warm. My husband slept without any clothes on for the two nights' stay.
Imagine winter in Harbin, and sleeping without clothes on!
Our family of 6 stayed in 2 rooms for two nights while visiting the Ice Festival. We are accustom to Chinese hotels and the Hotel itself was acceptable, but just. Just clean enough not to be dirty, just new enough not to be old and the breakfast was just O.K. The staff however was just not enough! Check in was painful (even with our basic Mandarin) our two room together were on different floors, and the staff just did not care. At check out it took a painfully long time for housekeeping to check the rooms and minibar for additional charges. The Hotel attempted to overcharge us both at check-in for included breakfasts and at checkout for dirty towels.
We truly enjoyed Harbin, the Ice festival is worth a visit, but spend much less and stay at a truly local Hotel or spurge and stay at the Shangri-la!
I guess I had low expectations for a city like Harbin so this hotel was ok. The room was ok but the thermostat was not very responsive. I had to open the window during the day to cool down the room a little. The breakfast buffet was not very good but the free internet was nice. The hotel is a bit old and needs to be refreshed.
I stayed at this hotel in May 2008. Altogether its a pretty reasonable place. The location is excellent in downtown Harbin, right opposite the main shopping street and a few blocks from St Sofia church and the Jewish temple is down the street. The hotel is only 2 stops from the station on Jingwei Jie, the bus stop is directly opposite the hotel. Alternatively taking a taxi should only cost around 8 yuan. I mention this because the taxi we got took us on a panoramic tour of harbin costing 28 yuan!!!! well, it could happen anywhere i guess, but it helps to be prepared.
the place is quite gay friendly - we are two males and requested a king size bed and there were no questions from the staff. Service is good, we borrowed umbrellas daily from the concierge and got directions and information as well.
the room was a bit on the worn side as is the whole hotel. its acceptable but not luxurious and certainly not fashionable, the whole decor scheme is from the 70s.
breakfast was good, no complaints there. there is no pool but there is a small gym, barely adequate though for a thorough workout.
altogether the hotel is a safe choice but theres just not many frills to justify the price. if you are looking for just basic comfort level plus cleanliness you might be better off at one of the chinese budget chains. certainly home inn and jinjiang inn are also centrally located and would be half the price of holiday inn.
definitely make the effort to visit the 731 concentration camp in pingfang, it is chilling. buses leave from the right hand side of the station, takes about 40 mins to get there. last entry is at 3pm and you should be prepared to wait for enough people to arrive in order to enter as a group.
My sister and I stayed here for 2 nights and we though it was a decent option in Harbin. It is close to many eateries and is very close to the main shopping street. Easy to get taxis to and from the main sites.
The staff were excellent. Not only did they sort out a fight with a taxi driver (do not pay more than 120 yuan for the taxi to and from the airport) but the concierge arranged our day trip to the Yabuli ski resort and even got us a discount!
The room itself was adequate - clean and well-proportioned. It wasn't 5-star luxury but we didn't expect it to be. This hotel's location is better than the locations of the 5-star hotels which we drove past.
If you're going for the ice festival then it doesn't matter where you stay as it's not walking distance to any hotels. We went to the park with snow sculptures first and then there were vans waiting with deals including transport and tickets for reasonable prices to take us to the ice sculptures.
This hotel is NOT a short walk to the Ice Festival, as noted in this hotel's description. I have lived in Harbin for four years. I was looking for a hotel to book some friends in. I noticed that the main page of this hotel indicates it is a 5 minute walk from the Ice Festival in Zhaolin Park. That is a mini-festival, but NOT the one people come to Harbin for. The main festival is on the other side of the river, definitely not a walking distance from anything. However, it is a good hotel in a great location (better location than the Shangri La, even though the Shangri La is closer to the main Ice Festival)). A taxi to the main ice festival will be about 25 rmb from the Holiday Inn.
Reservations messed-up. Made reservations by Internet on Holiday Inn’s website for standard room with extra bed & breakfast for 3rd adult. Breakfast was supposed to be included for the 2nd adult too. On arrival, none of these reserved extras were ready. We were able to get the bed in for the 3rd adult but wound up having to pay extra for everything else. After a total of a couple hours of futility working with the front desk over the course of three days’ stay, I was resigned to work this out with Holiday Inn back in the United States. I did not arrive in Harbin to spend so much time haggling out a contract. By check-out on third day, none of the bill had yet been straightened out and the bill’s details all looked very confusing. Somehow the total balance worked out to what was expected.
As for having three adults in a standard room with the extra bed, the room was maybe a little too small. It was wall-to-wall bed on one side. Nobody could roll out of bed.
Extra bed is foldaway.
Room 902's window view is the stairway escape, half at foot level, the other half of concrete.
I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights from January 5 until 9 during the Harbin ice festival. Upon check in the hotel receptionist seemed confused at my passport and had problems finding my visa stamp. The problems didn't end there they requested to see my credit for deposit purposes..which is normal for any hotel but proceeded to CHARGE a 7,000 CNY deposit onto it. They then demanded that I actually sign off for that amount even though the receipt said "No refund" on it! This was outrageous because the total priority club confirmed room rate was only 3725 CNY for 4 nights and they wanted me to put twice the amount on my card and then sign off on it as well. I objected but they insisted that this was how they do things in Harbin. I reluctantly agreed to sign but only on the back of the receipt.
This complete lack of tact by the staff didn't end there. In the morning I went down to their cafe' to sit. I was immediately told by the wait staff in a very rude manner that I had to order or leave the cafe. There was no one else in the cafe at the time. I politely asked if I could read the newspaper before ordering and they told me again that I had to order right away or leave. I asked to see the manager and they refused. Instead they called the security guard instead who verbally THREATENED me in his poor english. I took out my camera and took a few photos of this security guard later and showed the assistant manager. She was apologetic and sent a fruit basket up to my room but nothing was resolved as I saw the same security guard later that day glaring at me.
This type of threatening environment and poor customer service treatment is ridiculous for a large name brand hotel like Holiday Inn. I have stayed at numerous holiday inn hotels worldwide and this was the first time I have been subject to this treatment.
If you are in Harbin I would suggest that you avoid Holiday Inn Harbin and look at the alternatives. The location and room (which is barely adequate) is just not worth the potential hassle.
I had a few reservations at staying at this hotel as Harbin is not as popular as other areas of China. However upon arrival the staff were very polite and helpful. The breakfast buffet was lovely in the morning with a huge range of foods. This is a fantastic hotel considering its in a fairy remote part of the world.
It isn't the best hotel I've ever stayed in, but it works. Clean, good location and helpful staff. Porters were great in getting cabs, giving directions. Staff have decent English. Breakfast was filling too.
Harbin is SO cold, that it is nice to be in a central location. You can pretty much walk anywhere -- and then come back to a warm hotel. I'd stay here again. Good value for the money.
Great location and nice, clean modern hotel, close to everything.
Stayed for 1 night during the Ice Festival and chose this hotel for price, and cause we get "Priority Points". Pleasantly surprised. No problems and would happily stay again!
We went Harbin for the ice sculpture festival in Jan. 07. The Holiday in was a good location. We were able to walk down the main street, walk to the ice festival in the local park, to St Sophia and the river. The bell captain was very helpful with arranging transportation to the two other ice and snow festival and the Siberian Tiger park.
Harbin is a loud city. I lived here for 4 months 2 years ago and never really got used to it. How so? No where have I visited have I experienced so much horn honking as in Harbin, mostly from taxi drivers. You cant really believe how bad it is until you are in Harbin. The reason I mention this is where the hotel is located is an area with many taxis. I had to wear ear plugs to go to sleep, and I was on the 10th floor.
Also, starting at about 7 A.M. are people pushing carts to collect bottles and cardboard. The problem is they constantly bang on the back of a plastic bucket to let you know their there. When one is gone another follows about 10 minutes later.
The hotel has a very small and drab lobby.
Probably the biggest problem though is the staff can barely speak English and many cannot speak it at all. Now many reviewers on Trip Advisor will say "Hey, you're not in an English speaking country". True enough. HOWEVER, this is an American branded hotel, so many will pick this hotel with the expectation of an English speaking staff. Now, it's not the staff's fault. I know the owners of the English school that train the staff. The problem is they only have 2 weeks of training a year! Not nearly enough. So blame management or the owners for not spending more money.
NOW the good news:
The location is one of the best in Harbin. Right at the beginning of the city's best shopping street.
The rooms are THE cleanest I have seen in a Holiday Inn, ANYWHERE. The size is good for a Chinese hotel. The rate for the quality of the room is probably the best in Harbin.
The BEST part of this hotel? For those that don't know, Chinese beds are like sleeping on wood. The other hotel I've stayed at in Harbin (See Sinoway review) had a very hard bed. Not the Holiday Inn. Their bed was very Western comfortable.
I can sleep with ear plugs, so because of the nice rooms and the rate, I gave this hotel an above average rating.
I recently stayed at the Holiday Inn in Harbin for the Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival (Jan 2007). The big debate was between the Shangri-La and this hotel, however, seeing as I was only staying for one night (coming up from Beijing), and the price difference (Shangri-La was 1060RMB plus 15% vs. 498RMB plus 15% at the Holiday Inn), Ithought I'd give it a try.
I was pleasantly surprised! Of course this is no 5* star - usually when I travel I stay at the Marriott or Hyatt because I collect their points, so I really had no idea what to expect here. The room was quite large and clean (even bigger than my room at the Peninsula in Manila!), the beds were nice, and they even had down pillows!
The buffet breakfast included in the rate was OK - nothing too special - the regular western and Chinese breakfast foods.
The best thing though, is its location. It's walking distance to everything (except Sun Island) and there are lots of places to eat within its vicinity. I saw the Shangri-La on the way to Sun Island for the Ice & Snow Sculptures, and am glad I didn't stay there - there isn't really much around the hotel (ie you can't really walk around at night there etc).
All in all, I have a good experience there. The staff were pretty friendly, and the front desk staff were able to converse in English as well - though I do speak Mandarin. Given the price and location, I would stay here again!
I stay here for the second Time.Everything is clean and works. Its not like Holiday-Inn in Beijing or Shanghai, but I have nothing negative to say. Also one "Plus" is the Location, directly opposite of the Shopping-Street. It will surely be my first Adress for the next Harbin-Visits!
There are some awfully nice Holiday Inns, like the one in Phuket or the Lido in Beijing. And there are some less than nice, like the ones in Montreal. This one is somewhere in the middle. It is clean and the staff is helpful but the rooms are really not great. Mine was rather small and there was an annoying musty smell. There is absolutely no way this hotel is 4 stars!
The location was quite nice. There is a pedestrian street right in front of the hotel -- those are a rarity in China. There's a KFC nearby (if you like that kind of food).
There isn't much to do in the hotel as it is quite small. The sauna is very nice.
I am used to staying in Holiday Inns and Days Inns in the US. I stayed at Holiday Inn Harbin for 10 days and found the room (king bed) to be large enough that I didn't feel cramped and the small table for two was just right for having breakfast in the morning from the things we bought and stored in the small refrigerator.
The room was clean, the linens were changed regularly (everyday of I wanted)... the furnishings, size of room and such are all what I would expect from a Holiday Inn in the U.S. that was over 8 or 9 years old. Coffee/tea maker. stocked mini bar, a couple complimentary bottles of water everyday, Cable TV had enough English speaking channels to hold my interest...
The staff was helpful (Though I must admit while I don't speak chinese, I had an interpreter) There is a business center with internet access to check web based email. A room service menu was available, wash/dry cleaning, massage and such... Prices were are reasonable and when exchanging US for Yuan they didn't charge too much more than Bank of China did.
Location is at the top of Zhongyang street so its safe and shopping and dining starts at the front door... and its a relatively short walk to St Sophia's Church and down to the river and park.
I did not eat at the restaurant or use the spa. But the hotel is exactly what I like when traveling: A clean, safe, comfortable place to go to sleep, wake up and relax on the odd day I am not out sightseeing. Those who like to "vacation" in the hotel would be better off spending a lot more than the $45 US I paid and book at a resort. But I give this average (for the US) Hotel 5 stars for value and 4 stars overall. I'll be staying there again this winter.

I've been there for 2 days in May 2008. Close to the main shopping area. The hotel is surrounded by dingy stinking shops.
Shady rooms screaming for renovation.
Pros:
- Close to the city centre
- Good food (but stay away from ice cream refrigerator - disgusting stale ice cream)
- English speaking staff
Cons:
- stinking hotel surrounding
- old-fashion rooms
- NO free WiFi Internet access
