The Farglory Hotel is a big holiday hotel on Taiwan's beautiful East Coast. It is surrounded by a beautiful garden and is located on a hill. The views to the East to the Pacific Ocean and to the West to the mountains (up to almost 4.000 m!) and the estuary mouth of a river are magnificient. The Hotel seems to be relatively new. Transfer from the railway station to the hotel is provided for 100 NT$ and was very reliable. It takes about 20 minutes to go to Hualien City by car. To Taroko Gorge, an absolute must on Taiwan, it takes about 45 - 60 minutes by car.
Service was always friendly although not many of the hotel staff spoke English. A person speaking English was however always available. Hiring a car (2.200 NT$ per day + gas for a Toyota Corolla) was arranged perfectly by the hotel and the car was brought to the hotel.
There are three restaurants in the Hotel offering a Chinese buffet (I did not try) , Japanese Cuisine and Chinese cuisine. Compared to other locations in Taipei which had excellent food the quality was however a bit disappointing - there are certainly many places in Hualien where much better food is available. Quality of breakfast was okay, but compared to top hotels in Taipei also a bit disappointing. In addition, sometimes there were not enough places for all the guests so that I had to wait a little to be seated. Seemed a bit like mass tourism to me.
There is a very nice outdoor swimming pool with a perfect view on the Pacific. There is also an indoor pool, sauna and steam room which were okay but would not satisfy standards of a luxury hotel. The steam room and the sauna are accessed directly from the indoor pool and can therefore not be used without swimming suit. There are also no particular showers that could be used to "cool down" after using them. Also, the little terrasse that can be accessed from the indoor pool was quite noisy - probably cooling engines for the air condition were not far.
My room was in excellent shape and very spacious. There was a balcony with a view to the garden. It was always kept very clean. Internet acces is provided via cable free of charge.
Had the food been better I would have granted 5 dots to this hotel. Should you be there you must absolutely visit Taroko gorge!
I booked this hotel when I was already in Taipei, so the local Taipei travel agent got us a great rate - just $150USD/night. The hotel and sprawling grounds were all absolutely breathtaking. Everything was manicured to perfection. The views of the ocean, the city of Hualien and the mountains are all great from the hotel as it sits atop a cliff. We ate breakfast there each morning. The selection is plenty - both western and Chinese. We did not, however, eat dinner at any of the many restaurants at the hotel as they were very pricey. Because the hotel is far from the city (about a 20minute car ride), there's no restaurants that you can walk to. So, you either have to get a taxi to eat out or you have to pay the price to eat in. The hotel has a pub and a karoke bar, which was a good place to hang out after hours. Also, the swimming facilities were quite nice. The outdoor pool was closed, so we swam in the indoor facility, which had a huge window overlooking the ocean. There is also a hot tub, sauna, and steam room. Staff was quite professional even though there English was somewhat minimal. There are many tours that the hotel can arrange for you. We took a tour to Taroko Gorge, which was absolutely awesome. All in all, a great hotel - just a bit out of the way.
I stayed at the Farglory Hotel in Hualien for two nights in November 2007. It is a grand hotel at the top of a cliff overlooking the ocean and mountains. Too bad for us, a rare late season typhoon decided to blow in and block our ocean view room that we paid extra for. Under normal circumstances, I'm sure the view would have been exquisite. Creative visualization is what I have to rely on, as there was fog and rain during our entire stay. However, the hotel is large enough and close enough to Hualien that we stayed entertained. We did visit the sea park next door despite the bad weather. Our room was very well appointed, what you would expect from a hotel of this caliber. Extremely clean and luxurious - good linens and bath products. It reminded me of the high end Las Vegas hotels - all decked out in marble and velvets and VERY large. Our room was waaaay down at the end of a long hallway. You definitely get what you pay for at the Far Glory. There are several "theme" restaurants on site as well as a spa. Hualien is about 20 minutes by car and has great shopping and some of the best food I ate during my stay in Taiwan, including their famous dumpling soup.
I believe the Hualien Bellevista Resort is now known as the Farglory Hotel.
Perched on a hilltop south of the city, and a 15-minute drive from the centre, this hotel is proclaimed by locals to be the best in the area. If you can get over the faux Victorian Britain theme and the disney-esque characters strolling around the lobby, this is a very pleasant place to stay. The rooms are decent sized and clean, with all facilities including free in-room internet access. Guests can choose between sea views and mountain views, but the best mountain views are actually from the entrance to the hotel, so a good option is to go for a sea view and get the best of both worlds.
The hotel caters particularly for families with children. There is a small pool at the hotel, but the main attraction for children is the Farglory Ocean Park, a short walk away. The hotel isn't in town, but if you want to avoid a taxi ride into Hualien to eat, you can choose from the hotel's several restaurants. We ate in the Taiwanese and Japanese restaurants and had excellent meals both times.
For excursions, the hotel can organise a driver. However, we made our
own arrangements with a local taxi driver, who took us on two day trips to the Taroko Gorge and south along the coast. Both involve stunning scenery and plenty of attractions to stop at.
Overall impression: the hotel tries a little too hard to emulate a grand British hotel, which comes across as rather kitsch and seems incongruous in the surroundings. However, it is a very good hotel with great views, excellent food, and clean and comfortable rooms.
