I will start with the good things I have to say about the Tian Heng:

The restaurant staff for breakfast is the nicest part of the hotel.

The negative things:

They did not turn on the heat in the hotel. The lobby was below 9 degrees Celsius or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit and this is not an exaggeration. It was so cold in the hotel, when you talked you could see the humid air from your mouth.

There is a sign up that states the pool, exercise room, and executive lounge are under construction. I did not check the pool, but I saw no signs of construction at the executive lounge. It seemed more like it was closed to save the hotel money.

No one speaks English enough to communicate unless it has to do with getting money from you. I have stayed in many hotels in China and their ability to communicate in English is very poor, especially at a 5 star level. It is worse than the typical difficult communication, this was just bad.

The staff is not trained well enough to perform on the level expected at a 5 star international hotel. In general our experience was worse than the typical problems at Chinese hotels. The staff unfortunately is running blind and it seems that no one with a hotel management background has ever worked here.

I thought the hotel was 30 years old, the floors and rooms were so filthy. I was shocked to here the hotel is less than 1 year old. I kept asking if it was an old hotel that the name changed. The first suite we were shown had so many cigarette burns in the carpet and furniture. It was just as bad as the filthy stained carpets leading to the rooms.

The non smoking floor is never used and when we insisted being put on the floor, the circuit breakers had to be turned on when we arrived on the floor. There are no suites on the non smoking floor. The rooms at this hotel are much smaller than for instance the Ocean Hotel and much more money. The nonsmoking rooms are never used and therefore relatively clean.

The bathrooms are tiny and do not contain the promised amenities. The shower in our room did not work well, most of the holes in the rain head were clogged. The electricity in the bathroom could not run the hair blower supplied. Instead of fine quality shower products, there were industrial size pump bottles of shampoo and shower gel. I think this was a first for me at a nice hotel.

They supplied no top sheets on the rock hard beds. When we asked for one they just put a folded sheet on the desk next to the bed. Even when we showed the maid how to place a top sheet, the next day a folded sheet was again next to the bed. You were required to call for ice, but no one understood "ice' on the other end of the phone. After several minutes on the phone with several people, ice was finally delivered in a thin covered pitcher, not an ice bucket.

We had an awful experience at the restaurant where it was so cold, we wore our coats (similar to breakfast). We ordered a Coke and a warm can was slammed on the table, no ice and not poured. Food was served in a haphazard manner despited our instructions. We received one of three appetizers, the desert, then one hot meal and none of the other two appetizers. We eventually just walked out it was so bad.

Staff told taxi drivers the wrong places to go. No the worst thing in the world to happen, unless you are an English speaking person in China

Overall it was a terrible experience which I attribute to the owners lack of understanding of how to run a 5 star hotel (I can assure you this hotel is not.) and the owners apparent frugal nature. It was so bad it was comical. Having her Bentley and other expensive cars lined up outside the front door does not make this a 5 star hotel. After two days of a planned two weeks stay, we left the hotel for the Ocean Hotel. There were no questions asked, no manager apology, just a quick dash to check the room for stuff we may have eaten or stole. We went directly to the Ocean Hotel and it is sad how much better the Ocean Hotel is when compared to the Tian Heng.
