The Quintet is a beautiful place to stay for those looking to get away from hotels once in a while. Their breakfast at the Closed Door restaurant is outstanding, my room (Aurora) was very cute and clean, and everything down to the ipod docking station as alarm clock and the bottle of wine for a reasonable price was very thoughtful.

What blew me away was how helpful Fay and everybody else was when I tripped and sprained my ankle so badly that I was barely able to walk: It felt like being with friends! Fay organized a ride to the airport on a whim, everything was very smooth and friendly.

I will stay there again. And try not to hurt myself, but enjoy the entire stay!

I rarely give the 5 stars rating, but Quintet and Fay deserve it! As I get older and travel more, I have really come to value service - and Fay didn't disappoint. From the overview of the area and the map when we checked in to finding us a restaurant that served a specific local speciality we wanted to try - she was always available to help and give great recommendations. The location is great - I had a difficult time deciding which part of the city we should stay in, but in the end the French Concession turned out to be the best choice - at times I couldn't believe I was in China! And we never stay in B&Bs, but the reviews at Quintet were so good we decided to try it. We are glad we did, It really is an oasis.

My husband and I stayed in the Aurora room on the top floor, which is a bit smaller, but I chose it for the outdoor patio area. The lofted bed was quite comfortable and cozy and having the patio there as an extension of the room meant we never felt cramped. I worked from the patio and Fay even had an extra long internet cable ready in the room for me so I could be connected while outside. The wine in the mini-bar was actually really good and quite reasonably priced compared to wine at the Shanghai restaurants.

We took the subway a few times and it was quite efficient. We also walked to People's Square, which took about 30 minutes, but we shopped on Nanjing Road along the way. The restaurants Fay recommends are great - but we also recommend 7 People bar (be sure to use the bathroom while you are there!).

Not wanting to stay in one of the many large hotels available in Shanghai, Quintet was exactly what we were looking for: a smaller, more personal hotel/ B&B in a convenient location for a stay of six days. We had booked one of the mid-sized rooms, on the building's second floor. Designed and decorated to great taste, it was always pleasant and relaxing to return to the room after days out in town. The location of Quintet speaks for itself and Fay has been a wonderful host. The downstairs restaurant also comes recommended, which serves an excellent breakfast. We certainly hope to return to Quintet some time in the future.

My partner and I had the pleasure of staying at Quintet for 3 nights in October and wished we could of stayed longer. I am a travel agent and spend my day booking accommodation around the world and would highly recommmend this to any of my clients. Fay has done a wonderful job decorating and has so many special touches in the rooms. On arrival Fay gave us a map of the local area listing restaurants, bar and places of interest. The French Concession is a great area for exploring on foot.

The restaurant downstairs called "Closed Door" served a delicious breakfast, which kept us going for most of the day. It is a fabulous spot for lunch or dinner, you have to make a reservation prior.

I look forward to my next visit to Quintet, our oasis in Shanghai.

I stayed at Quintet for 3 nights in October and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The 5-room property once belonged to an upper middle-class Chinese family, so you get a sense of what life in the French Concession was like in the roaring Twenties.

My room, the Fleur de Shanghai, was well-equipped with all mod cons, including a flat screen TV, DVD player (with complimentary DVDs that fit the room's theme - mine had The Devil Wears Prada and an arthouse French film), iPod dock and free wi-fi.

No mini-bar though, but that wasn't a problem because there's a cafe/restaurant on the ground level and heaps of other F&B joints in the neighbourhood. Incidentally the cafe serves up a delicious Mediterranean breakfast every morning, and this is included in the room rate. At night the cafe turns into a private dining destination frequented by socialites, expats and model-types.

The B&B's location on Changle Lu is excellent; taxis are in plentiful supply and you're less than a 10-minute walk from Changshu Lu metro station (Line 1/the red line), which takes you to just about everywhere of interest in Shanghai.

Very well suited to independent travellers, couples on honeymoon etc, but a note to those with bulky luggage or mobility problems: call ahead to make sure someone is around to help, as rooms are only accessed via a steep and narrow staircase (this is an old "lane house", remember).

I recently stayed in Shanghai for 3 night at Quintet and had a fantastic time! I had the Fleur room, which was super chic and very inviting. Lots of amenities to make your stay comfortable. The breakfast is excellent in the downstairs cafe, Closed Door. You will not walk away hungry! The French Concession location is also central to many points of interest like the Propaganda Poster Museum, Jing' An Temple, shopping and nightclubs. The proprietor, Fay, is an outstanding host, she had so many great suggestions for what to see and where to go. I know that I won't have to look for another place to stay in Shanghai when I go back. This place is amazing!

How to describe a place that is a cozy bed and breakfast, a boutique hotel and has a first class "petit" restaurant? A rare find. Happiness. You want to keep it a secret...really.

Quintet with it's 5 beautifully designed rooms is perfect. Check the website, what you see is what you get and more... because there is Fay, the creator of Quintet, to help you experience the real Shanghai and to remind you, that you do stay in a B&B with a host: how nice is that!

And in case you do want to leave your cozy room, courtyard or rooftop...Quintet is in a great location of Shanghai: the French concession. Exciting Shanghai street life is right outside your door. The small streets are full of cute shops, places to eat and all in walking distance. Well here it is... the secret is out....

My girlfriend and I recently stayed at the Quintet in Shanghai. We were looking for something that could be a nice alternative to the large commercial hotels where the service has often been sketchy here in China. This little bed and breakfast in the French Concession was absolutely what we were looking for. It is quiet and quaint, tastefully decorated and the service was exceptional. Fay, the owner, is extremely friendly and accomodating. We enjoyed it so much that we stayed an extra night in Shanghai, largely because of how comfortable we were at the Quintet.

They have a great cafe on the first floor that is bustling at night, serving great food and a well thought out wine list, and a great breakfast each morning. There is a really nice rooftop garden that offers a romantic spot for a glass of wine as you look out over Shanghai at night. We would recommend this B & B to the most particular of travellers.

Quintet is a newly opened bed and breakfast guesthouse we discovered through friends. It's located in the north part of the former French Concession area. It has only 5 rooms with private baths and is very well decorated in a hybrid art deco style. The breakfast included with the room rate was delicious, as they have an excellent cafe downstairs. We enjoyed the breakfast so much we ate dinner there, too. The overall atmosphere was fantabulous.

We especially enjoyed our loft because we had our very own private rooftop garden. Our loft, aptly named "Aurora," gave us our first glimpse of a Shanghai sunrise. Amidst the urban jungle that has come to symbolize the other parts of Shanghai, we felt sheltered and peaceful in our French Concession loft.
