If anyone is thinking of going to Sanya, head to the Mangrove! What an experience!!!! From the minute we arrived, we spent the day amazed how tranquil and amazing this hotel is.
We had just arrived from bustling hong kong, still a little jet lagged. it had been pouring rain for 3 days straight there, so we were apprehensive about our beach holiday. Looking back on it, Sure it wouldnt have mattered if it was pouring out of the heavens.... this place is a gem!
We were there in May, very quiet! the beach is white, with clear water- which was warm and sometimes you would be swimming with the fish! there are lovely beds with coconut shaped umbrellas. What was really nice was that you were never disturbed... only the little old ladies trying to see you pearls was the only disturbance, and they were nothing compared to another beach holiday in Tunisia (as we are two girls travelling by ourselves, we were never left alone) but China is completely different... they let you have your space in sanya!
Markus was the best manager we have ever come accross- and we stayed in 6 hotels on our 3week china trip! he of course spoke fluent english and helped us with any problems we have! i think he likes meeting Europeans- this is primarily a chinese resort, with some russians. I think there were two other European groups at the hotel when we stayed, so from this alone, i feel that it was a pretty authentic chinese resort! a group of chinese workers from ibm arrived on our last night and it was nice to see them having a "holiday" like us!
the room was spotless, with a shower on the balcony! breakfast was buffet- food for all continents and the pools were excellent, though i prefer the beach. We nearly cried leaving this place- it is a magical resort- nothing compared to some European destinations! If anyone is considering taking a beach holiday with a tour of china or hong kong, GO TO SANYA! its only an hour flight from Hong Kong!
We stayed at the Mangrove for the October National holiday. It was wonderful. The staff went out of their way for us and helped us to arrange a day trip to Monkey Island. Our room was right on the lagoon pool so it was like having our own private pool. The rooms are spacious. We stayed with two adults and two small children and had a king bed. The buffet breakfast was very good with a huge selection to suit most tastes. The beach was sandy and the chairs and umbrellas were free. The resort offered water sports for a fee. We would stay there again.
My partner and I stayed at the hotel on the 27th September for 4 days in the sea view elegance room.
Room was beautiful and spacious. Well decoarated and comfy bed!
We travelled to Hong Kong first but had a bad stay there. Upon arriving in Sanya we were doubtful as we had such a bad time in Hong Kong but to our surprise we had such a great time that we didnt want to leave.
The weather was not great but it didnt matter. There was pleanty of people on the beach and in the sea and the atmosphere in the hotel was very relaxed.
The evenings had large barbeque and live music. There was a nice family atmosphere in the hotel, and I will definately come back with my kids in the future.
Whilst we were there it was the Chinese national holiday. Many Local Chinese people stayed in the hotel and it was very busy. Some were nice and was not!! If you want a peaceful romantic stay then aviod this period.
Other wise from this the actual srvice and food in the hotel was great. I'd reccomend the thai restaurant, and also the breakfast was good.
Staff were very helpful and spoke good english.
I would especially like to thanks the management in this hotel, and especially Markus who made our stay very special. He paid us special attention as he knew that we had a rough time.
Staff like that are soo hard to come by and priceless for this resort. I have styed in many countries in the world and never had such an experience of a staff member being so helpful and trying to make my stay as comfortable as possible.
Sanya itself is beautiful and great location for honeymoon.
The hotel came across alot more relaxed than other chain hotels on the beach. Also seemed more authentic to china.
Definately reccomend this hotel. We will definately be coming back.
In October 08 we spend 3 nights at Mangrove Tree in an Elegant Sea View Room and enjoyed the modern equipped and stylish room with lateral seaview. The master bed is big enough to sleep 2 adults and one child, however the mattress is chinese standard which means quite hard but not uncomfortable! We have had an add bed for the second child and still have had enough room in the room. The sea is not only visible from the room and balcony, but also from the bathroom - from shower & bathtub - geat!!!
Staff was friendly and professional.
Our kids enjoyed the pool with the fun slide.
The beach is very kept clean and there were always enough sunbeds and umbrellas even though we went during chinese high season. Beachtowles are also provided. There is water sports available such as trimaran sailing and jetski but there was not so much demand, so that it was still a fairly quiet beach. Beach Volley and soccer was also used by guests.
The food was fresh & good, but the buffet breakfast caters mainly for chinese guests. On the bad side: unfortunately it was not possible to get a cappucino for breakfast - only at the lobby lounge.
The Thai Restaurant has a nice atmosphere (which is rare in China) and the food was delicious.
We also liked the casual atmosphere of the beachbar (kids liked the burger of course).
Mangrove Tree is located right in the middle of Yalong Bay and perfect for strolls along the beach!
If we go to Sanya again- we will defenitely book Mangrove Tree!
Stayed 3 nights in The mangrove tree and it was supberb. When you arrive the lobby looks straight out onto the beach and it blows you away. We had a sea view room with a huge bed, tv with english channels and 2 showers. I enjoyed showering on the balcony a few times which is a nice touch. Room had a dsl internet point but with my iphone i would have perferred Wi Fi(only available in the bar area but free). The breakfast was crazy, there was so much food i couldnt believe it from eggs and bacon to noodles, rice and dumplings. We dined twice in the thai resturant which is the best thai food I have ever tasted and the service by the pretty waitress was of course excellant. We didnt try the pool as the beach was so clean and the sea so clear we just had to go there everyday we could. We met frank the manager who gave us some helpful tips about the area. As mentioned in other reviews the Chinese people do tend to walk around in only their bathrobes and swimwear which can be off putting when eating your breakfast. I tried the sauna but apparantly its not used much so they only turn it on when you get there so its not that hot.
I found this destination browsing in TripAdvisor and I have to say it has been a very good decision.
We arranged for a three week work/vacation in China my wife and two daughters 16 and 12, getting here for the second weekend of the trip to recharge has been a very good choice.
The people in Sanya and in the Hotel are really friendly and know how to care for the tourist.
Hotel food and overall experience is very good.
It is nice to swim at the beach, although the sea is too salty. The rooms are huge, and the food it great. It is a recommended place for vacations.
Very calming relaxing hotel despite the olympic celebrations being there just as we arrived. It has a very friendly atmosphere, the staff are very delightful and helpful. The view from our room was excellent being able to see the sea at the front and you open your door to views of the mountains. Perfect. The room was clean and very in keeping with the area. Lovely bathroom. The food was excellent, all Eastern choices, no western food except in the bar area. Coconut soup was the best thing I have ever tasted. Be prepared to be the only British there ,as we were. The Chinese people are very friendly, we even had a laugh with the Beach sellers even though we could not speak each other's language. The other Westerners were visiting Americans and a couple of groups of Russian.
A beautiful place. Only drawback was sometimes rubbish from the fishing boats was washed up on the beach but it was quickly cleared up unlike the other hotels along the shore line.
First time to travel Sanya Hainan. My friends and workmates visit the place for many times. They advice me to try the Mangrove Tree Resort. Yes, it's really different from other hotels in both sides. So many hotels along the bay and even in the city centre.
It's a wonderful place to relax, the ambience, room view, archeticture design, food and spa are quite very good. We loved the Thai and Korean foods. It looks plain wide ground with a nice view of the ocean.
A few things that need to improve like beach privacy as we need to relax but a lot of ladies offered their crafts and shells for sale. Really annoying and force us to buy. We moved to garden pool near the bar but the water looks very dirty. The pool edges with algae.
We plan to visit again, it's good for family with a wide range of kid's facilities.
For a change, my family decided to celebrate new year at Sanya Mangrove Tree Resort instead of Phuket Thailand. As we arrived at the hotel the main entrance looks very simple, but it's really unique compare to the next hotels. The lobby overlooking the beach where you can see the islands. The room view its amazing overlooking to the sea. As we went down to the pool, you can see a uique design with waterslide and the swim up bar. It's very clear and clean water with beautiful landscaping.
While the beach where we really enjoyed most of our time, a white sand beach, perfect for relaxation and very clean. The beach bar BBQ also a nice place for dinner overlooking the sea with a live entertainment.
We plan to come back next holiday, and I recommend this hotel to my friends & office mates.
We stayed at the Mangrove Tree Resort for four nights after a friend had recommended it to us. Like our friend, we also really enjoyed our time there to the max: The double room was very clean, of great standard, it was also equipped with international TV stations and there is free DSL-Internet. The ocean view was awe-inspiring, the food was good, and spa facilities were nice. The service was always very friendly, professional and very personal – even the Resident Manager took great care of us. Frank, thanx for everything, it was amazing!

At the end of our three weeks china vacation, we had the pleasure to stay four nights at the Mangrove Tree Resort in Sanya. The Hotel is located at the beautiful Yalong-Bay with clear and warm water and a white beach. From our Seaview-Suite we had a nice view also over the park and the pool. The three restaurants offer chinese, thai and western food, the best one is the thai-restaurant. Every evening there is live-music at the restaurants, the beach-bar and the lobby-bar, situated at a large pond with burning fires. The service is excellent: In the evening, after returning from the beach, we took a shower and a quick drink at the lobby-bar. One hour later we had new towels for shower and for the beach in our bathroom.
Our two sons loved to play in the pool and to drink a fresh coconut inside the pool at the pool-bar. English-conversation with the reception is easy. To our surprise we met the resort-manager, and could talk german with him, he is from Northern-Germany, working in china for ten years. Maybe he is the reason for the high service-level in this hotel. If we return to china, we will choose the Mangrove Tree Resort again.
The Hotel was still pretty new when we´ve been there and we also got a brand new room in which i even had to plug in the television for the first time :P.
The architecture is very different from the other resorts and is indeed very interesting. They have 2 very nice pool areas and a pretty beach area. Overall it is a fantastic and well kept resort
The rooms are tastefully desigend and spacy with nice bathroom and 2 showers, one of it outdoor on the balcony which is a very nice idea.
The breakfast was also above standard for Hainan resorts and we also visited the Thai Restaurant which is simply fantastic concerning quality, design and value.
But there are also a few downsides i have to name. There was still some building in the resort on some suites but it really did not disturbed us. The english knowledge of the staff is not very good which maybe leads to the next problem --> very few international guests. In fact we only have seen 3 other foreign couples. Considering the fact that chinese people are not always used to the customs of a 5* hotel you can expect to see people bath suit on the breakfast table or a axe shirt at dinner which really destroyed the atmosphere a bit for us.
Overall we would prefer this hotel over ANY other resort in Yalong especially the Sheraton which is pretty much hyped and crowded in our opinion.
