We stayed for two nights at the Wenhai Eco Lodge outside of Lijang. The organisation of our stay was very efficient.

Breakfast and dinner, which is included in the price was great, fresh ingredients and very tasty. A pack lunch provided for treks. The scenery is spectacular and Wenhai is a perfect place to get away from the crowds. Your stay will also help support the community.

If you're in the Lijiang area, the Wenhai Eco-lodge is a great off-the-beaten-path stay. My dad and I hiked there with a guide and horse (in case one of us got tired, 120Y) and it took us 4 hours. It was overcast, so we never saw the top of Jade Dragon Mountain, but it was still beautiful. It rained at the end of the hike, which made things slippery; we were glad to have trekking poles and good raincoats. We were the only guests there for the night; the food was good and the manager (Mr. Cun) was a great host (he doesn't speak English, though). Food was delicious and the electric blankets kept us toasty (room and full board is 120Y/night).

The Eco-lodge has been supported by a bunch of foundations/groups, but is struggling a bit because green tourism isn't that big with Chinese visitors (yet...), so visit and help a worthy cause!

The second day we hiked to a village about 1.5 hours away and chatted with the locals; again, lovely scenery and very peaceful. We walked next to the old tea trading route that leads to Tibet. We took the jeep back down the mountain (300Y), wishing we had had more time to hike around!

the staff are so helpful and accomodating, they will get a van to meet you in lijiang and drive you up the mountain to the eco-lodge at your convenience, should you choose not to hike up the mountian (5-6 hours). the facilities are nice, there are heated blankets, western toilets (a luxury to any traveller in china), great food and a great environment. people from the community staff the facility and take you on hikes, boating, or horseback riding (if you choose to go to wenhai lake which is a drive away). the best part is just relaxing on the patio and talking with the people.

We just spent three days at Wenhai. We arrived there after spending two days doing Tiger Leaping Gorge, so we were ready for some relaxation. It was amazingly peaceful. We were the only guests there at the time, so it was pretty quiet. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The bathrooms are shared facilities, quite basic but do have a proper sit-down toilet which was such a (welcome) rarity in this part of China. We spent our time walking in the amazing villages and seeing some beautiful scenery. Food is prepared by local villagers, who use the facilities at Wenhai. We had great dishes freshly prepared for us each night & at lunch. We ate with the people who worked at Wenhai too which was nice and made it feel really homely. Only they couldn't speak English and we couldn't speak Chinese so didn't get very far with conversation! I'd recommend staying here to anyone who is keen on walking, great scenery and good food. If you are after luxury, this place is not for you. There are no fluffy bath towels or the privacy of having your own bathroom. It didn't matter to us though and we had a great time.
