Thought I need to put the other reviews in perspective.....

We booked at the hump fully knowing that we're looking at a hostel, with the "s". They have two types of accommodation: the dorm type with bunk beds almost for free, and then the "private" rooms that cost about US$20. Nothing beats that price. The staff are friendly and will help, even with carrying the luggage upstairs two stories. When traveling in China, spending a few nights in a place where they speak English and even have Western food on the menu is not an unwelcome thing. In fact, the rooms are spartanically equipped, no towels, no closets, nothing. The bathroom is a segregated area in the room, with shower, toilet and sink area divided by curtains, but the place is clean. At least in our room, we did not find any critters. Yes, it is noisy at night; the same building houses the Yak Club, with music till the early morning hours. Hostel management know that, and they provide for ear plugs right on the night stand next to the bed. The location of the hostel is unbeatable, right in the center of town, by the pedestrian areas and shopping centers. The roof terrace is exquisite, partly covered, partly open, with excellent views down to the street level. At least while we were there, the guest crowd consisted mainly of Westerners from all around the globe. Then, you find a large number of visiting locals who seem to come for either the western atmosphere, or to profit from the free internet access, which is wireless everywhere in the property. At times, it feels almost "intellectual" in the Hump, with the average age probably in the 20's somewhere. Anyways, how to rate the quality of the Hump ? In a time where one can easily spend 300 USD for a "real hotel" per night, the Hump's burden on your wallet is very benign, the equivalent of a couple of beers. Keep that in mind when you look at the evaluation of the property; it has got nothing to do with a five star hotel.

not cool: no soap and no toilet paper in the bathrooms, no outside food.

The Beds are really bad. It's a very thin foam matrass on a wooden bed. Not much comfort.

The bar and cafe is excellent and great place to meet people and sort out onwards travel etc. Also the staff are really freindly and helpful. The dorm rooms however are pretty crap.. dank and lifeless and the beds are not very comfortable. The bathrooms are also not particularly clean and have cockroaches and mozzies! The beds are cheap though so it depends what your priorities are whether or not you should stay in this hostel.

In our room, all the padlocks opened with one key, of one of the girls in the room, I would not trust their locks. Also, there were a lot of mosquitoes and noise. But all in all, it was fun, and worth the money.

A huge and slightly impersonal hostel, - with a large open bar/tv area, and a huge roof terrace with pretty good views over the city.

Popular with younger locals who hang out here to drink, play pool and ping-pong, and conduct strange incomprehensible flirting games. In theory this should be a pretty good party hostel, but for some reason there's isn't as much interaction between travellers as at some smaller, more cosy places. Staff can be a little brisk, and although not unfriendly, they don't go out of their way to be helpful unlike many other places in China.

Good western style food (some actually really excellent pasta), and reasonably priced beer, but avoid the plasticy "chocolate"

Cheaper rooms are very basic, and pretty large, but benefit from storage lockers. Lack of clothes drying space is a problem.

Individual on-suite rooms are very cute and nicely designed, but the inflated price might make you question the value, especially as it can be pretty noisy. You might be better off opting for a proper hotel instead.

Great place. Simple rooms, pretty good bathrooms, and great common area with a good vibe., Staff's helpful and pretty good at English. Location is good, and it seems that a lot of useful bus routes pass nearby

Had a bit of an issue with an incredibly drunk roommate who tried to piss all over another guy in our dorm at 4 in the morning, and they took a while to get him out, but we got the night free, and other than that it was great...

Very good place but it is over a bunch of Chinese clubs so it is very loud in some rooms until very late. Earplugs are provided by the hostel. Fantastic staff.
