What a great hotel - very centrally located. We could walk to most attractions although you could use taxis which were very inexpensive. The hotel itself was very clean, rooms were spacious and buffet breakfast was absolutely fantastic - lots of hot and cold choices including noodles and dumplings. Not all staff spoke english, but this was not a problem. Loved it!
This is a nice hotel in a good location for shopping. The breakfast was good. The room was decent for the price. But, I would not stay there again or recommend it because our two nights were unbearable. They turned off the air conditioning system at night but would not admit it. The window could only be opened a few inches and let in more noise than air. My daughter and I tried to sleep on the floor under the window just to be a little cooler but it was not much help.
I stayed here in October 2008. As other reviewers have said, it's right in the middle of all the action in the middle of town, and it has all the features of big 4 star hotel, delivered with the usual chinese quirkiness.
I was upgraded to a suite , with an extensive view over smoggy Kunming (definitely a place to stay whilst on the way to somewhere else). There was a definite smell of cigarette smoke throughout, and the ceiling was lower than I'm used to, but the TV and broadband worked just fine. The staff were very friendly and obliging - the concierge walked me halfway down the block to show me a good place place to get snacks.
The in-house breakfast was about par for the genre.
The only catch is that little English was spoken. My scratchy Mandarin was definitely needed when it was time to sort out a snafu with the laundry and later on to book a driver to Shilin (tip, get up at 5:30 and be there in time for sunrise, you'll get the place to yourself, and it's other-worldly without hordes of tourists)
A very pleasant surprise at the end, though. It's much cheaper than the big international chains. If you speak a bit of Mandarin it's an excellent choice.
Arrived from Guilin at rush hour arrived at hotel ok no problems checking in, room very spacious internet worked when connected via LAN, showed hotel home page, pressed log in small window popped up saying if close window you disconnect.
Went for evening meal on 28th floor had western mine was spaghetti ok nice ,my partner ordered roast chicken, it came with chips and some veg veg almost raw the chicken was size of a pigeon and did not taste nice also not fully cooked some raw meat on leg and brest bones.
Later went to change travellers cheques was told they don't do this and must go to a bank to change travellers cheques, i was a bit put out as this is supposed to be a four star bussiness hotel, and to be able to change TC's there should be a definate must have service ''very bad practice if you ask me ''.
Also only three cans in mini-bar a budwiser a sprite and a coke plus two bottles of water, no milk or creamer and two sachettes of esspresso coffee, and two bags of chinese tea one black the other green , would have liked some western teabags and some sugar also. I suggest two coffee satchettes ,two tea bags and eight sugar satchettes to enable a drink in evening and one first thing in morning.
Rooms were spacious and comfortable and the location good.
We couldn't get the internet to work on our laptop, but the staff were helpful though unsuccessful in trying to make it work. In return they allowed me free use of the business center computer so they did what they could.
English is spoken enough here to make most basic requests understood and fulfilled.
Stayed on the basis of the reviews on here and was not disapointed. My room was huge and had a great view, service was good and the breakfast yummy. Was on the 25th floor.
It's in a great location right in the middle of the city with shops and 2 supermarkets Park and Shop and Carrefour really close. The old town is 2 minutes away and if you wander round you can still find the Muslim quater remanents.
Beds are firm - they all seem to be in Yunnan - but extra pillows helped. Got sweets and condesed milk each night (a little weird but a nice touch) Hotel guests were a mix of chinese and western.
My conference booked me in here - it was my second stay. The hotel is really beautiful, and the rooms are gorgeous, nicely decorated, and really, really comfortable. I'd say top-notch. Quiet. Internet worked perfectly. Everything in the room functioned and was clean.
Location is great for wandering around in the crazy big shopping area. Buy some tea!
Fitness centre was closed.
Breakfast is great. Food was good.
It IS aimed at the Chinese market - so the service is not, say, what you'd get in Bangkok. But you don't pay what you do in Bangkok or elsewhere - really good value for what you pay.
High recommendation to stay for a night or two before you head off to somewhere more beautiful like Lijiang.
We arrived for one night and planned a little shopping. Great location for that with several department stores, tourist store and Carrefours all within one block. We had an executive level twin room which was comfortable and cozy. The room's modest size was compensated for by nice Asian decorating touches. The internet worked very well. Beds and bath were fine.
The reservations: First, the executive level gives you access to the executive lounge, where you check-in. The afternoon lounge hours do not offer any alcoholic beverages, just some soft drinks, juices, and little desserts. Second, for a taxi in the early morning to get the the airport, we were on our own. The hotel entrance corner is busy during the day in the shopping district, but since they are side streets, completely vacant when trying to make a 0730 flight. We were lucky to have a drop-off happen by, but otherwise we were told by the hotel doorman to walk on our own (with luggage) to a busier street and try to get a taxi.
That departure note left a very sour taste after a generally pleasant stay. If a hotel has upscale rates, it should be prepared to help air travelers who must depart on the first flights of the morning. The "on-your-own" attitude was inexcusable. I had an excellent translator who did not misunderstand the doorman's instructions and unhelpfulness..
The New Era is definitely not an international hotel geared for western tourists. It is -- instead -- a very friendly and efficient hotel geared for Chinese tourists. The problem with that is that the staff don't really have a good command of English. (However, they try very hard.) The room, likewise, was not slick and "cookie cutter": it had a warm and welcoming Chinese look to it -- without all the hard-edged extras that one finds in international chains. Even the windows opened! One small point of criticism: the approach to the hotel is by a very crowded small congested road -- which is dark at night. So watch out for motorbikes and SUV's in the dark -- plus a very uneven rood surface. (There is nothing even resembling a place for pedestrians to walk without difficulty.)
We stayed at the new Era for a couple of nights in January and as mentioned by other reviewers the location is very convenient. We booked a superior suite that was spacious, clean, and quite comfortable. Bathrooms were clean and functioning well. The bed is quite firm which I enjoy but could be a bit too much if you like it on the softer side. Sheets were pretty good for China!
The breakfast is very good with lots of variety to please Asian and Western tastebuds. The breakfast is served on the top floor where you get a nice view of the city so its easy to sit with another cup of coffee and take in the views.
The biggest drawback to the hotel is the complete closure of the fitness center, pool, sauna, and other recreation facilities advertised on their web site located on the 7th floor. Their explanation for the closure remains a mystery but im pretty sure they said it would be functioning by February or April. If this is an important requirement for you (it was for us so we were disappointed) I would recommend calling the hotel directly to confirm.
The hotel staff were quite helpful and friendly from the bell men to reception. We found the to be true throughout Kunming....folks are quite laid back for China and always willing to help when we were lost or asking for directions.
We really enjoyed Kunming but two nights seemed sufficient. The city is well organized, folks are friendly, and transportation is quite good. There are no shortage of shops in Kunming though we found nothing of interest to take home. If you are going to stay in Kunming I think you need to reach out and explore the natural beauty in the surrounding area to make more than 2 nights interesting.
The hotel is an easy walk to Kundu market which was ....well, interesting. We liked finding a couple of pubs where we could relax with some beers (never had any luck finding a cold one exept at the Hump Bar --- a stones throw from the hotel). No shortage of discos and karaoke bars if thats your thing. Fun just walking around watching the crowds.
The area around the hotel has a lot of chinese restaurants. Some have menu's with pictures which was helpful or just as easy to point to the table next to you and order what they have! The waitresses were always patient and seemed to have fun practicing their english with us.
All in all, a nice hotel to spend a few quiet days in Kunming.
All the reviews seemed to recommend another hotel, but as we were only in Kunming for one night we decided to choose the New Era as it seemed more central.
Wow.
This was by far the cleanest, friendliest, fanciest hotel of our entire trip and at only 400 yuan, definitely the best value for money.
The reception was very helpful and spoke good english. Indeed, when we went to book a train at the lobby travel agency (who did not speak good english), the receptionist was there to translate. When a taxi driver didn't want to understand, the Doorman was very pro-active in helping out...
The room was large, clean, comfortable, fully equipped, better than many international hotels in Beijing.
The restaurant was a tad schizophrenic - dinner was rather disappointing, we had expected something special (the panoramic view from the top floor) and only got average chinease food with uncomfortable furniture. Breakfast the next morning, however, was excellent. An incredible buffet with European, Chinease, Scandinavian, Japanease themes and absolutely everything one could possibly imagine.
Finally, location. The reason we chose the hotel in the first place. Absolutely the best in town overlooking the main square and pedestrian area (and shopping).
If you ever go to Kunming, please do yourself a favour STAY HERE!!!!!!!
My family stayed in this hotel from 17~19 Dec 07, after spending some nights at an inn (Ancient Town of LiJiang, about 50min plane journey). This hotel is a welcome sight after staying in inn.
Here are some good points about the hotel:
1. The place is clean (lobby, restaurant, toilets, corridors, rooms, etc).
2. The restaurant is at the highest floor (27th or 28th I think) providing panoramic view of the city and also pretty good food. Prices are very affordable. A plague stating the restaurant won awards of being one of the best in the city.
3. The room (Std Business double non-smoking) is very clean. Bed is comfortable. Writing desk with internet connection point is a plus. Toilet is also clean and well equip with toiletries. A hair dryer is also at hand.
4. Room service was very prompt. We asked for help with the lighting and someone was at the door within 2 min! I was impressed. BTW, the lighting problem was boo boo on my part. Everything was working well. The prompt response also went for the laundry service.
5. Front desk personnel were helpful and professional. However, some smiles on their faces would have earned them more points.
6. The hotel is located in the heart of the city. Shopping malls surround her. Medical halls and a hospital (the largest in Yunnan I was told) is just within 10 min walk. I brought my daughter to this hospital as she was running a fever for 5 days then. As everything was in Chinese/Mandarin, it helps to have an interpreter if you do not speak any Mandarin.
Here are a few points that I think could make my stay better:
1. The recreation facilities at the 7th floor were OB as they were "taken out of service". I am not sure if that is temporally of permanent though.
2. As this hotel does not have total non-smoking rule, smoking is allowed at some floors. Make sure you get a non-smoking floor/room by stating in your reservation and confirm at the front desk, if that is your choice. At common areas like the lobby, smoker can puff their way through, making it uncomfortable for non-smokers. The restaurant is divided into smoking and non-smoking sections. Be there early if you want to be seated in the non-smoking section.
There are some good points about this hotel, but overall we were not happy chiefly because of the dishonesty of the management of this hotel. We booked this hotel via Priceline but they did not honor the rate. Instead, they made us pay more than double the rate we were guaranteed. If we wanted the pay the rate we were guaranteed, we would have to move to a hotel next door that was less than 4-star. Also, the biggest thing was we had already settled in our hotel room, then they called to say they made a mistake and we would have to move rooms to get the lower rate. There was absolutely no concessions or apology from the manager, although the clerk was very apologetic. The solution of the manager was for the clerk to pay the difference, but how can we let the clerk pay when he probably only makes 1,000 RMB a month?
The good points- This hotel is located right in the center of a mall. However, we did not find much of interest or anything to buy there. The goods were mostly for teenagers and not the styles worn at home. Another positive is the room felt basically clean and functional.
The bad points- We feel the management was basically dishonest and do not treat guests with courtesy. Also, the beds were not comfortable. It felt like sleeping on the bottom or box spring of a set of mattress. There is no padding and you can literally feel the springs and frame of the bed. Very uncomfortable and strange. Also, the room smelled a little, which is typical of most hotels in China because almost everyone smokes here.
We were most suprised by this hotel. It did not start to well when we were dropped off in the street at the hotel entrance & thought what have we here? This was soon blown away by the sparkling clean hotel lobby & room.
The location was perfect surrounded by 'boys toys' shops selling cameras, Hi Fi's, electronics etc. A couple of minutes walk and you were in the main shopping area of Kunming - perfect. We had a nice stroll round a supermarket in the basement of a shopping mall.
We had a meal in the restaurant on the top floor with window views over the city. Unfortunately had to leave early in the morning for a flight so did not get to sample the breakfast but were given a box of food to take with us.
My only regret is not staying two nights here, unfortunately have no plans to return to Kunming but if we did then the New Era would be top of the list.
We stayed 3 nights. The New Era has modern rooms, excellent services, friendly staff and a great location right off the new pedestrian center of Kunming. The included buffet breakfast is more than ample. They also offer prearranged free airport pickup and drop off. The 25th floor (where we stayed) is nonsmoking rooms. There's construction on the 26th floor, but only during the day - no problem to us. The swimming pool & gym are nothing special, but if you want exercise get out early and run on the walk streets. Many supermarkets, dept stores, restaurants nearby, and you're not too far from Green Lake. Plus, you can catch local buses to anywhere in the city for 1 Yuan at nearby bus stops. Tip: Better rates are offered by China-based sites.
The location is unbeatable, it is the dead centre of the city, it was very cheap (by Western standards) and was clean, with nice large rooms. I got free internet access, but do not know if that is normal.
The restuarant has great views and serves a huge breakfast buffet, which is well worth getting up for.
Slight down point, there is a big building site currently behind the hotel, and it works some unusual hours.
If you are in Kunming, then I recommend this place
Our family of 4 (wz 2 kids age 11,7) stayed in this hotel for 2 nights (1-2/Dec/2006).
Room was comfortable/clean. Buffet breakfast served varities of food.
Hotel located at shopping/eating area which is just few steps away.
We return to Kunming 3 days later after our Dali/Lijiang free&easy tour but stayed at another 4* hotel, the other hotel definitely cannot compete to NewEra in terms comfortability/location/breakfast etc.
NewEra will still be our number one choice if we're to return to Kunming again.
initially couldnt get much info on this hotel so had to take it on face value - it surpassed our expectations. we were on a non-smoking floor which was a bonus; breakfast buffet was terrific and the rooms were very comfortable - the location of the hotel was the real bonus as we could walk around the city easily - its very very close to the bird and flower market as well as a number of department stores - well worth staying there.

Stayed in an executive room for 2 nights.
Great Location, eateries, Carrefour, in the vicinity.
Good clean facilities with tasteful decorations.
Good breakfast with fantastic panaromic view.
Just outside the hotel is a row of blind people providing massages in the open air. The best I have ever had.
Heater could have worked harder.

Showed up here right after a long, painful bus ride from the border with Vietnam. The perfect place to unwind.
The decor was quiet, luxurious and most importantly, welcoming. A wonderful hot shower and pristine white sheets were the best ways to unwind.
The location was also perfect -- right in the middle of the downtown buzz.

initially couldnt get much info on this hotel so had to take it on face value - it surpassed our expectations. we were on a non-smoking floor which was a bonus; breakfast buffet was terrific and the rooms were very comfortable - the location of the hotel was the real bonus as we could walk around the city easily - its very very close to the bird and flower market as well as a number of department stores - well worth staying there.
