I have NEVER seen anything like the rooms here before. Since everyone's comments describe the room the same way I won't add much. I will say that it took awhile to figure out all the switches, which was fun. One BIG problem though are the window shades. You may not know the switches on the wall that control them and I was guilty of trying to pull it down and off the track. Though I wasn't the only one as the other one was also off it's track. They need to put a small sign to let people know the shades are automatic or they won't last long. They sent someone up right away to fix them
I REALLY like that the toilet is in it's own separate room with a sink and door. Privacy when someone else is using the shower!
The only negative about the iPod station is it does not charge them. (At least not my Nano 4th gen)
That said, I thought the bed was too firm. Not Chinese style firm, but I was a little sore the next morning. Though the second morning I was okay.
The Pool is AMAZING! Largest jacuzzi I have ever seen, There are two parts. One part has concrete beds you lie on with jets massaging your back. Never seen this before. The second part is the standard jacuzzi and large. Then there is the pool itself. Also, a separate cold plunge pool. Who the heck uses these? The Finns? It was freezing!
Never tried the restaurants.
NOW let's talk location okay? Forget about even having directions for the taxi from the airport. This hotel and surrounding area is to new. Have the number and give to the driver to call the hotel directly. Even so, our driver took a wrong turn and had to call the hotel a second time.
Now a previous reviewer said no restaurants near by. Well there is now. About a 10-15 minute walk (or 5 minutes by taxi) there are about 6 Chinese and one American Subway franchise.
And a reviewer said there was nothing close by even by taxi? What does this guy consider close? I chose this hotel because I need to go to the U.S. Consulate to add pages to my passport. It was a 15 minute taxi ride. ($2.25) A taxi to a major shopping street with plenty of malls and restaurants was 10 minutes. ($1.12) It does seem that all the taxi's in this district all know how to get, just show then the hotel card. And speaking of taxi's, even in a still remote location, there always taxis lined up outside the hotel. Not even more central located hotels can always claim this.
In 2 years this area will be amazing with the tallest building in southern China being built with dozens of others all around the hotel.
One final note. I have stayed in many hotels in China and this one had the BEST English speaking employees I have ever met. That made it so much easier when getting directions around the district. All the employees were very friendly and helpful.
I stayed at the GH Guangzhou for a week on business. Got a great deal of $100/night bundled with my airfare on Asiana. But, it didn't include breakfast and the breakfast buffet, only choice - no menu, was one price of US$28 so that bumped the daily rate. Take note, there is no central heat in this restaurant and the mornings were COLD. I ate with a sweater and coat.
The place is sparkling new and the rooms are large and beautiful. Comfortable bed, electronic shade & curtain. Large flat screen HD TV that swiveled out of the wall for good viewing. The iPOD dock was a nice addition.
The bathroom was a classic example of form over function. The shower/tub area had a window into the bedroom albeit with a shade. The sink was an island but the mirror was too far from the end of the sink so you stand on the side of the sink and swivel the mirror. Weird.
"G" the western style restaurant is spectacular but expensive. Great food. I ate one lunch and one dinner there. Clients took me out the rest of the week. The bar is comfortable with a nice liquor selection. But, beware. I ordered a Talisker 10yo Scotch after seeing the bottle and it was $35! Ridiculous. I then switched for the rest of the week to Glen Morangie which was a more "reasonable" $12. The Chinese tend to pour measured shots so you don't get much of a break.
Staff is the usual cloying, overattentive Chinese model. But, cheery and helpful when necessary. The 22nd floor sky lobby is inconvenient. You go up from the ground floor, then switch elevators to go down to your room. Gym and pool are great.
The location in New City is pretty isolated but a 10-15 minute cheap cab ride can get you into more interesting parts of the city.
I rarely stay at Hyatts (even the so-called "Grand" ones). They are boring but pretentious, and the staff are generally poorly trained. Like Radissons, they think they are better than they really are. HOWEVER, THIS hotel is a cut above the rest. A BIG cut. Big, bold, contemporary, and spacious, with legions of well-trained staffers (essential, because getting lost in the cavernous but minimalist corridors is an hourly occurrence). The designer had his way over those obsessed with functionality, it seems, as signage was also minimal, and public rooms concealed behind door that more resembled solid walls. The trek to the restaurant was a liability insurer's nightmare, as continually stepping up, down, or over (with poor lighting and counter-intuitive motion) is a necessity. This may sound as though I didn't like the hotel -- just the opposite is true. From the spectacular water sculpture at the entrance to the (mentioned by other reviewers) beautiful and (over-, really) designed bathrooms, this hotel is superb. Mirrors everywhere enhanced the feel of spaciousness (in the room I walked into one, thinking it was a doorway). Swivels on mirrors, the television, and more allowed constant arrangement and rearrangement of the room to suit my mood, function, or desires. I upgraded to the business floor, and the lounge was convenient, well-staffed, and open long hours.
I've been in museums and attended art exhibits that were not as impressively designed and arranged as this hotel. All of the room lighting had dimmer switches, electric drapes and blinds opened and closed for the exterior view, to change the bathroom from amazingly open to exceptionally discreet (though the switch for the blinds for the bathroom was outside the bathroom -- allowing someone to play an interesting prank or take a sneak peak at the person in the bathtub or separate shower in the glassed-in room). The bathtub was soaking size, and everything else was LARGE, as well.
This hotel is too good to be a Grand Hyatt. It is truly a 5-star service with a 6-star design. However, to be on the safe side, wear a helmet when walking over the uneven surfaces, and bring a map to find your way around.
The hotel is virtually brand new, and the rooms are a nice size, completely modern with electric curtains, shades, and 42" flat screen TV which is on a hinge so you can see it in bed or even in the shower which is in a glass enclosure. The shower head is fantastic, a rain fall type with good pressure.
If you are in Guangzhou for business and need a secure, comfortable place only to sleep and have breakfast in, you can't go wrong here.
But it is very isolated. You can't walk to anything. No restaurants. No shopping. Even the taxi rides are fairly long. If you're in Guangzhou for a while and are the type to walk out the front door and see shopping centers or such, stay somewhere more central as there are plenty of very nice 4 and 5 star hotels in town.
Pros: The staff is great, the bars and restaurants are nice. The exercise facilities and pool are beautiful and have a great view out from the 24th floor.
Cons: Not much of a lobby area which also happens to be 22 floors up from the entrance. 120 RMB per day for internet which really should be included for a hotel aimed at business travellers.
Beautiful new (April 2008) property in Guangzhou, quite convenient to the Canton (CIEC) Fair grounds by hotel shuttle, or subway just a couple of blocks away. A bit out of the way from the usual hotel areas, so the taxi drivers don't know it yet.
During the fall Canton Fair , the hotel had staff at the Guangzhou East train station to meet arriving guests and shuttle them to the hotel at no extra charge.
Our standard room was huge, ultra-modern, with a king bed and electronic controls for lighting, window shades and blinds. High speed internet (extra charge) and big flat screen TV with integrated iPod and PC feeds were standard. Bath facilities may be the nicest I have ever experienced in years of travel to good hotels worldwide.
All the amenities were there, with very attentive service by a large staff, most of whom spoke enough English to be very helpful. The concierge found us a local dim-sum restaurant for brunch on those wonderful delicacies within a five minute cab ride.
The 22nd floor Market Cafe restaurant offered a superb dinner buffet of western, Chinese & Japanese food at a reasonable price in a beautifully decorated environment. The adjacent lobby bar in the bridge connecting the two towers of the hotel was a quiet environment for drinks with a spectacular city view.
As another reviewer commented, the 22nd floor lobby is not the most convenient, forcing you to go there, to get to and from your room each time. But offsetting that is the fact that it creates a very secure hotel environment, since only those with room keys can use room elevators from the well-staffed lobby floor.
Overall, an outstanding experience. We'll book again on our next trip to Guangzhou
This hotel is located in the middle of a forest of construction plants. Its neighborhood will surely be very happening in 2 to 3 years but for now it is a little bit out of the way (like 15 minutes from the city center, 25 from the famous canton fair and 60 from Shamian). If you want to eat or shop in the area your only option will be the ritz-carlton next door.
The reason why I have to give it 5 stars is because I couldn't fault the rest: this hotel is brand new and very modern though very cheap. I paid 900CNY for a HUGE room, very tastefully furnished and inclusive of breakfast. The staff was very helpfull and nice (especially the breakfast staff), all those I adressed during my stay could speak decent english (from the luggage porter to the managers).
In conclusion, although the location is not best, this hotel is a real bargain with impressive rooms. I would definitly recommend it.
this is absolutely 5 star. a bit hard to find straight away, its in the middle of a massive redvelopment , so its surrounded on all sides by new buildings going up, and taxis dont know where it is yet, but well worth the effort. Annoying is the sky lobby, basically reception on floor 22, so you go up to 22, then change elevator to go to your floor, gets a bit tedious after a while. staff are very good, if not a bit over bearing. they want to take you to the elevator each time, and i usully got two room visits a day, to see if everything was ok, plus a turndown visit late at night. but overall well worth the money. i stayed in the basic room, a grand king. king size bed, huge room, fantastic bathroom , shower, tub, great view.. and all for about 900 yuan plus tax,. about $200. if everyhotel was as good as this i would travel more
