I don't know quite how to describe our experiences at this hotel. Datong is a rather plain-looking place -- but it isn't as dreary and gritty as the guidebooks would have us believe. And in the middle of the city is the Garden Hotel -- a wonderful place! We've never before experienced such caring and concerned service. My wife was a little unwell during part of our stay -- no fault of the hotel -- it was a bad cold... The staff continually checked to see that she was all right. One young man even brought tea -- unsolicited -- to the room. The room was good; the breakfast could not have been better; the front desk were excellent. And the hotel arranged excursions by car to area sites -- at an incredibly reasonable rate. We were genuinely sorry to leave (after four wonderful days there).

This probably is THE place to stay in Datong, but I can't quite give it 4 stars. Given the alternatives, it probably deserves it, but I wasn't "wowed." The room was clean and modern, and breakfast was good but not great (not enough selections geared toward Westerners). Would have liked better English language skills from the staff, something that perhaps could be expected at a "luxury" hotel in China. I couldn't really count on them for any assistance or advice (bring the China Rough Guide, which seems to be the most complete and updated China tourbook right now).

FWIW, the rates available through elong.com and ctrip.com seem to be the lowest available. I showed up at the hotel without a reservation (I knew there would be rooms available), but was unsuccessful in negotiating a better discount (and I tried pretty hard!). A room for 2 with breakfast on the weekend was about US $100.

My 2 cents on Datong is that it's not a great Chinese city. Worth seeing the famous caves and hanging monestery (cits at the train station runs a convenient tour), and then it's worth leaving town ASAP. One night is more than enough, and consider using the overnight trains to minimize your stay. Datong is by no means horrible (and it's pretty cheap), but it's no place for a foreign tourist to linger.

Without a doubt this was the best hotel I stayed in during my 3 month trip across China. Location in the heart of town, comfy rooms and Illy cappucino for breakfast! The rodizio for dinner at the restaurant is very good too. There were also many locals eating there (although they were more interested in the all-you-can-eat crab).

I cannot believe some of the harsh words in the reviews below. They must come from people who are only used to staying in 300 dollar rooms. The Garden Hotel is a Chinese 4 star hotel which I booked via Elong and cost me 480 Yuan a night. A bargain.
