I spent three nights at this guest house. Jim is himself a very interesting person and has been running this guesthouse and his hotel a long while so he knows how to make you feel comfortable. Breakfast is excellent - I can attest to - and other meals as well as seen by the number of people in the Peace cafe. The Peace Cafe is the first floor of the guesthouse. My room had a private western style bathroom and was very comfortable and decorated with a Tibetan theme. Had a TV too though I didn't watch it much. Directly across the street and down the street are many ticket places to get transportation to other places. Very convenient and comfortable.
Stayed here for three nights. Walked in off the street with no booking. It's small - don't confuse it with the bigger Jim's Tibetan Hotel. My room was tiny but lovely. The weather was miserable when I was in Dali and Jim's guesthouse and cafe was a great retreat from the rain. Very friendly staff and the owner is a lovely guy.
If you're booking ahead ask for a room at the back. My room at the front overlooked the street and had a beautiful view, but I paid for the view with noisy nights - the street outside has a very active night life.
I really liked this place and would recommend it to any budget traveller - it's unpretentious but very well run and has a real air of cosiness and comfort.
We've found a great new place to stay in Dali old town (Yunnan) called 'Jim's Tibetan Hotel'. The hotel is a beautiful place and built in colourful Tibetan/ Bai style. As we have heard that many guesthouses/ hotels in Dali are very noisy we found Jim's Tibetan Hotel at a very nice spot: it's in a quiet street but close to the old town of Dali. It's about a 5 minute walk to the south gate of Dali and then you are in the centre.
About the rooms: they have very comfortable beds which is a big plus as most of the beds in China are quite hard and uncomfortable. You can tell that the owners paid a great deal of attention to the inside decoration of the whole place which is very original and colourful. The rooms have wooden handmade Chinese furniture. The bathroom is good with shower or bath and heating lamps (must be very nice in wintertime)! Outside the rooms is a wide balcony where you can relax sitting outside. But they also have a garden and rooftop terrace with a magnificent view over the Erhai lake and the mountains. The hotel's atmosphere is warm and inviting and the workers are friendly which is a good feeling if you have been travelling for a while. We would surely recommend this hotel to anybody who is looking for a peaceful place to stay with beautiful decorations. Last but not least we want to recommend the restaurant which serves very tasty food for breakfast (homebaked bread!) and for lunch and dinner they have a choice of Tibetan, Chinese and western food. In the end we stayed a bit longer than planned just because we liked the place so much!! The rooms are good value for money and start from 200 yuan. They have singles/ doubles/ triples and 4 bedrooms (this is good for families).
we have stayed at jim's guesthouse in dali/ yunnan. it's a nice, small guesthouse with friendly workers. the atmosphere is cosy and relaxing. usually one of the owners is around in the evening and if you want to you can ask them information about the surroundings.
they only have 7 rooms, 6 have private bathroom with shower and toilet and 1 is a 3-bed dorm. they have smaller and bigger rooms and the price is between 50 and 80 yuan. downstairs is the restaurant, try the tibetan goulash and if you like to drink strong stuff try the famous jim's no. 1! it's very easy to meet other travellers in the guesthouse/ cafe because of the inviting atmosphere.
we also took one of their daytrips to minority villages, very interesting and well organized. well worth the money.
all in all we enjoyed our stay in dali and that was surely also because of our staying in jim's guesthouse!
