We arrived past midnight as our flight from Wuhan was delayed. And after 3 nights in the Yantze river cruise, I was looking forward to sleeping in the comfy bed that I have come to expect from JW Marriott hotels, even if only for just one night. But after a few minutes in the room, I felt some sort of insect biting me. I thought that mosquitoes in the room would be very strange. And I can't have possibly brought any back from the Yangtze river. I was just glad that the "insect" didn't follow me all the way to the bed.
The bed was comfy but the aircondition was definitely not cold enough. The following morning, I was just quite surprised to see that I had what looked like mosquito bites on my arms and legs. I tried to communicate what I experienced to the staff thinking to at least prevent another helpless traveler from getting bitten by whatever insect it was. But as english was not very well spoken and understood, the housekeeping staff kept thinking that I said someone had entered the room.
My colleague who luckily didn't have the side nearest to the door, escaped being bitten. I just wish I had too.
Well, someone (or something) did enter my room... Yes, a bug did!
We stayed in Chongqing for just one night before starting a Yangzte River cruise, so based on one night the review cannot be comprehensive. The hotel was included in our itinerary by CITS (Chinese travel agency), and for one night it was fine. Upside, as a Marriott you know it will be comfortable and you know what to expect. And it was v reasonably priced for a Marriott. Downside, you could be anywhere in the world i.e. the hotel is very westernised. There is a Chinese restaurant in the hotel, but when we went it was literally empty. We did not explore the city enough to comment on the location but I understand it is in the business district. We walked around for an hour or so and it is 5 minutes walk from what seemed to be a main shopping street with department stores etc (very very expensive) and also some local brand stores which were reasonable for polo shirts etc. It is also 2 minutes walk from a local farmers market (look out for what looks like an alley of flower stalls almost opposite the hotel and literally follow your nose....after the flowers are stalls with live eels, chickens etc..) which was really interesting.
Not related to the hotel review but you MUST try local Hot Pot. It is a chili broth that it heated at the table which you dip all types of meats and veg into, it is AMAZING.
So for one night the hotel was fine, and good value, but if i was to stay longer I would want to look for something less westernised.
We stayed here for one night before embarking on our Yangtze River cruise. The hotel is beautiful and we had a very spacious, elegant room on a high floor with concierge-level privileges. The staff's command of English was not as good as at most other hotels we visited in China. My major complaint is that the air conditioning was insufficient to keep our room at a comfortable temperature. The hotel claimed that local authorities regulated their power usage and that they were providing the maximum permitted a/c based on the outside temperature. I found this explanation to be unacceptable for a 5-star hotel.
Bus from Chengdu Marriot left us off here late and we were unable to arrive at hotel in another district before 11 PM so we booked a room here at the last minute. Staff were very helpful and room was great. However, this was the only hotel in 6 cities in China where we were required to pay for the map. Also, the room was very hot and when we requested Maintenance to check out the air conditioning, he told us to open the windows (?). So it was very warm and uncomfortable in the room.
The Marriot is a top grade luxury hotel, with the comforts and amenities that that implies. We were there for just one night, but the hotel facilities (our room and the fitness center) were very clean, very comfortable, and very luxe. The service, as so often in China, presented some problems because of language, but people seemed to be making a real effort to make us comfortable. The pool and the fitness center were terrific. My only real gripe was the internet charge, but that happens at many, many hotels.
Stayed one week at the JW Marriott, Chongqing with a group of professionals in October 2005 and another group of colleagues returned in October 2006.
Excellent location near business centre of Chonqing. Close to range of restaurants, clubs and bars for those interested in the nightlife.
Walking along the streets in the evening seeing all the different food stalls is quite an experience and not for the squirmish. Pig's snout, chicken's feet, duck's head and blood and lots of miscellaneous animal insides.
Some evening entertainment at the hotel too. Luxurious standard of accomodation; tastefully decorated marble bathrooms.
Variety of menus in the hotel restaurants. Staff friendly and helpful. Hotel's business suite very useful with free internet access.
WOW!!! We had a magnificant suite with a good view at a very reasonable cost.
We only stayed overnight so have no comment on proximity to sites etc. The buffet was fabuluous. Maybe a little pricey but this was a splurge for us after two weeks of economizing,. Luxurious!!!
Stayed there over Christmas with Spouse and two kids. Excellent location, definitely the best hotel in Chongqing. Nevertheless a few nagging issues. Obviously with a five star hotel expectations are higher.
Generally the staff was very money minded and the the appearance of largesse, which is a key feature of a five star hotel, was missing. Every item had to be paid, even the tourist map from the front desk and in the middle of the night the front desk called to remind that we had exceeded the credit card guaranteed deposit and should add more deposit. The room was very large and the price excellent - unfortunately the room also was very hot, even after switching off the air conditioning.
The quality of the exercise machines in the gym was poor and the staff inattentive.
The breakfast buffet was uninspired.
Overall, great location, rooms etc., service is more of an issue.
I've stayed at this hotel twice in the past year, both times on business. The level of accomodation is very good, even by Western standards. Rooms are well fitted, have an excellent broadband connection, mini-bar, clean and quiet. These fill most of my requirements.
The hotell is centrally located in downtown Chongqing, the city peninsula, and has easy access to the metro, buses and of course cabs. Cabs are cheap and plentiful, Suziki's at that! Having the directions in Chinese or a modest command of Mandarin are needed with the cabs although as with many hotels, the hotel staff will tell the driver where to go if you don't speak Mandarin.
I've eaten at both the Chinese and Japanese restaurants in the hotel and they're quite good but if you're in Chongqing, get out and experience the hot pot and Sichuan food at its best.
The Marriot hotel in Chongqing best feature is it's location -which is right in the heart of this modern City. You will find shopping arcades, restaurants and the hassle and bussle which youd associate with and modem city.
Staff here are smart and willing to please, however with the language barrier; sometimes do not get it right all of the time. for example when I asked For a glass of Chinese chardonnay by the glass I got a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon.
The room was large and the housekeeping standards were superb, quality of the fittings and space in the room were super.
Internet access was a charged service which l think these days are unacceptable. Esp when all other hotels I have visited in China the internet service was free.
This alone would put me off booking this hotel again when l visit Chongqing. I will the the harbour view a try next time and compare them both!!
I stayed just one night here. Very plush business hotel. Nice bar. Helpful front-desk staff. The only limitation was that I couldn't find a place in the hotel to book local tours, and the concierge desk was often unstaffed.
This is a new hotel and it is as good as the St. Regis in Beijing. When compared to an equivalent 5-star hotel i nthe USA, this one is probably 6 stars.
This was one of my favorite hotels in China. The week we were there, it was up-grading to a JW Marriott. If you are spending the night in Chongqing, stay at the Marriott!!!

Recommended and the room cost is about 500rmb.

Really nice hotel, first rate service, great location. Stayed with a tour group, definitely one of the nicest hotels we stayed at in China.
Having stayed in the Marriott, Chongqing for 2 weeks, I cannot fault the service, facilities and staff. A superb hotel
