I thought that the hotel was a very pleasant experience overall, despite the fact that I was only staying for one night and had come down with a nasty fever and flu which I had for the duration of the stay.
The check in took a little bit of time but we were a large group. I got my room and even in my befuddled state noticed that the room was very generously sized, and had a rather nice traditional rectangular layout. The bathrooms, as others have mentioned, are also quite large. The room came with plenty of water, which I took full advantage of. Climate control was very easy to use, as were the light and dimming functions of the lights in the room.
My only gripe with the hotel was that the breakfast buffet seemed somewhat lacklustre, but my view may have been influenced by the influenza. Overall, I was glad I was staying there and not somewhere else. The fever broke the next morning, which was a great relief! Staff were very cordial and helpful during the stay.
I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights in April, 2008. The room is spotless and big. I love that you can see into the room from the bathroom, makes the room feel even bigger.
Every evening when they come to arrange the room for night time, they leave a little kit-kat bar on the bed along with the weather forecast of the next day. The first night, I even got a plate of fruits!
The location of the Intercontinental is in the heart of Chongqing, so it is very convenient; restaurants and shopping malls are all around you. Catching a taxi is super easy.
The hotel also provides a map of Chongqing city, one in Chinese and one in English.
we got scammed by the taxi driver, too. Cost of living is cheaper in Chongqing compares to Beijing/Shanghai. The taxi rides are about half as much. We got picked up at the airport by a taxi and he claimed his meter is broken. He won't give me a price, but I persistently asking for a price, he claimed it would cost 70-80 rmb to goto my hotel. After I arrived, I told the doorman and he help me negotiated down to 60.
It is a newer hotel, but it does not feel like it. The lobby is small and full of smoke every time I walk down there. We are in a non-smoking room, but you can smell a hint of smoke sometimes via bathroom vent.
The internet speed is inconsistent.
The hotel is located in a great location, walking distance to everything.
We paid about $100 usd to be on the club level, including breakfast. The club level service is good and so is the breakfast selection....for this price, I gave it a 4 stars.
For some reason, when I contact the hotel via email, their email can not get thru me. This happened several times asking for hotel direction and rate dispute.
I was late for my ride during checkout, so I did not review my check out $ carefully; I got over charged. The hotel kindly refunded my overcharge after my email request.
This is probably the best hotel I have stayed at in China. Large, comfortable rooms, Extraordinary value.
We (a group of 8 friends) booked a 'luxury weekend' stay via priorityclub website and paid about 650RMB (includes tax) for a deluxe room with a wonderful buffet breakfast.
Note the following points about taxis. We arrived in 4 separate taxis, and all of us reported being the victim of attempted taxi driver scams . Some refused to use the meter (Saying that it was broken). My driver didn't use the meter, then suddenly, about a minute from the destination, he fixed it to read 110RMB." [I refused to pay him anything, pointing out that I had caught him attempting to cheat us.]
The Hotel's website states that a taxi from the airport costs 80RMB. For whatever reason, this is clearly wrong. On the two occasions when we insisted that the taxi driver use the meter, it cost no more than 45 RMB!
Note also that tolls are free for taxis. On two occasions, two taxi drivers dishonestly claimed that tolls were very expensive and that I therefore must pay him more.
Also note that one particular taxi driver parks out the front of the hotel, and only takes passengers who are transiting to the airport. He refuses to use his meter and consistently asks for 90 or 100 RMB for the trip. When I told him to use the meter, he deliberately embarked upon a circuitous route, at which point I hopped out of the cab.
I am concerned that some of the hotel bell service staff are cognisant, if not complicit, in this scam (after all, it is quite common in China). This driver was clearly well known to the hotel staff. It is disappointing that hotel management seem to do nothing to prevent their guests from falling victim to these sorts of scams at their hotel.
Bottom line - you should definitely not pay more than 50RMB each way from the hotel to the airport.
When it comes to service and care, this hotel just can't be topped. Everybody in the place seemed to want to be sure that we had no problems. They couldn't have tried harder! Every aspect of the hotel was excellent -- even to checking very carefully that we knew exactly where to go for restaurants, sights, and so on. We felt special!
Check-in was amazing (hot towels, personal service - all with a genuine smile).
The buffet breakfast is very good and the hotel's location is as good as it gets with many places within walking distance (in the center of the city and adjacent to the main shopping district) - to note though, taxis are abundant and inexpensive.
Where the Intercontinental really shines is in its rooms (I received an upgrade). They are huge and they are really well done. A comfortable king-sized bed and a beautiful bathroom.
I highly recommend this hotel. Chongqing is a great city to visit in China and the Intercontinental hotel is a safe choice as your base.
Extended stay in Chongqing for 7 nights, booked online directly with hotel; special terms requiring 4-day max stay with weekend, so we made 2 bookings to cover the whole period. Reception had some trouble with this (systems didn't match central), and it was a hassle upon checkout as they tried to integrate the 2 bookings, resulting in a higher average price.
Apart from that, we can't rave enough about the hotel. Very high standards - definitely 5-star, comfy, very spacious rooms, good service, and located in the very heart of the shopping/city district. Really can't get better. To top it off, we paid <$90 a night, breakfast included!
We stayed at this hotel at the end of our Yangtze River cruise. Booked a deluxe river view room at RMB 600 including buffet breakfast.
The hotel is super value. It is very new, the room is spacious and very luxurious. The beds have feather tops !!! Super comfortable. The bath room is beautiful.
The Chinese restaurant at 9th floor is beautiful, and the food is good and reasonably priced. You can have a very good meal at about RMB 200 for 2 person. A large dish of vegetable, enough for 5 people, costs RMB 22. Half a chicken costs RMB 58. Don't bother about going outside the hotel to eat.
But what impressed me most, is the service. I was travelling with my father and his wheelchair. When we checked out, the hotel staff can see that I cannot possibly push my father on his wheelchair, and handle 3 pieces of luggage on my own. So without me asking, they send a staff to follow me all the way to the airport. She helped me push the luggage all the way to the check-in counter.
I am really impressed ! I have stayed at Peninsula and Four Seasons before, but I have never encountered such good service. And the best thing is the staff all do not seem to expect any tips.
With my partner I went on a trip on the Yangtze in October and had to spend one night in Chongqing. Since we did not have a hotel previously arranged, I had booked a discounted room in the brandnew InterContinental over their website.
We were pleasantly surprised by its great location right in the middle of the pedestrian area and the big room with Yangtze view we got. The bed was super comfortable, breakfast was great, staff was eager to help and if I will ever return to Chongqing I will stay there again.
