Modern high rise hotel, a small Asian chain. Basic modern rooms, wood cabinets for closets, wood shelving, very basic bathroom, typical very firm chinese bed, flat screen TV on the wall, 2 club chairs in the room for seating, spectacular views from our 28th floor room. Centrally located if you are touring, close to shopping and pedestrian mall. Large dining room with tourist buffet for breakfast and dinner, Asian and Western dishes, eager to please service in this dining room. You could do much worse lodging wise but one certainly does not get a luxury feel from the lobby or rooms at this property. Modern, well run and efficient, what more does a traveller need ?
Well, it was a pleasant hotel. The room we were in must be just being renovated as you can feel the thickness and good cushion from the carpet. My wife likes the flat TV on the wall and I must said it was worth all the money we paid for Chinese money $600. The breakfast was fantastic and never have time for swimming pool.
To spare everyone from the agony I went through, I would just say the sevice was horrible from bellstaff to especailly front desk staff. The hotel is dated, with mostly tour groups; definitely not business travelers friendly. If you are trying to check out during the peak morning hours, you'd better be extra early so you don't get in the mix of tour groups disputing indiviual room folio...etc. They lost my reservation, after been treated disrespectfully for nearly 40 minutes, the management finally surfaced and gave me "an apartment" in the Plaza. So I cannot say what the regular rooms are like, but I could only imagine they are just as dated as the rest of the hotel. I moved out of the Harbour Plaza the first chance I got...to the JW Marriott across the street, and that is definitely a 5-star hotel in every aspect. And the location is just as convenient, I would never make the same mistake again!
We just returned from a two week tour of China, and stayed one night at the Harbour Plaza as part of our tour. This is an excellent hotel, as nice as any on our tour (or elsewhere). The hotel is beautiful, our room was excellent, and its breakfast buffet was superb. The hotel also is in a very good location.
All of this has been described by other reviewers, so I can only add to their positive statements. You will like this hotel. It was one of the two best on our China tour; the other being the New World Renaissance in Hong Kong.
We also really liked Chongqing. Unfortunately, we only were booked in for one night. By the way, if you are wary of Sichuan cuisine, you can find several American fast food restaurants within a few blocks of the hotel.
We stayed here with our 4 children (ages 9-11) and absolutely loved it! We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite which was bigger than some New York apartments and the price was very reasonable. We ate room service food almost every day which was delicious and reasonably priced. The indoor pool was fantastic for the kids. The hotel is right in the center of town where there is plenty to do. It's almost like staying in Times Square. It is attached to a very large mall that has an ice rink. The service at the Harbour Plaza was fabulous. We were very pleased with the whole experience . We stayed here because it was recommended to us and we would highly recommend it as well. We can't say enough good things about this hotel!
We stayed at this hotel in May 2005 in part because they had a "club floor" or something like that. The club distinction meant that you signed in separately from the main desk - nothing more. The hotel is in a good location - next to a large pedestrian shopping area. It's a big hotel and seemed to cater to groups or businessmen. We ate at the main cafe late one night. I expect that they stayed open for us but the menu was limited. There's probably a better choice for a family vacation; I expected it to be nicer.
Really nice hotel - we stayed for eight straight nights so we got to know our room pretty well!
ROOM: Quite large and modern, nicely detailed and appointed. Clean and bright. Only complaint - and it is a pretty small one not necessarily the hotel's fault - our room was quite humid and clothes took about 4 days to dry.
SERVICE: Excellent - friendly and helpful. Used hotel bus driver for numerous tours for our 4 family group and he was helpful and friendly.
LOCATION: Right on a very large shopping plaza and literally connected to a very upscale shopping mall with numerous restaurants. When you are at the elevators, one way leads to the hotel lobby and the other literally enters the shopping mall! Very important if you have to spend time indoors due to lousy or very hot weather which is common. Many other shops and restaurants within walking distance, including a 10 minute walk to a large department/grocery store called Carrefours.
GYM: Very good; not very large but decent with adequate equipment and friendly staff
DINING: Only ate in the main cafe called PORTICO's but it is wonderful. Tremendous selection including some great buffets of incredible variety that will suit many tastes. Very key as Chongqing itself poses some incredible challenges for your palate, as the Chinese food in this region is radically different than what most people have had. I am Chinese and have had more experience with Chinese food than most (mostly Cantonese) and I could not identify a large portion of the Chinese dishes offered in restaurants outside the hotel.
I liked this hotel because it was modern and classy but not glamorous or ostentatious. I am sure there are more elegant and luxurious hotels, but none more liveable and practical. As long as you are not visiting during peak season, the rates are very reasonable, especially for groups. We paid $55/night, a large discount over the rack rate, which is a great value.
This hotel has absolutely the best location at Chongqing, next to the main square and shopping areas. The rooms are large but lighting is a bit dark and decor appears slightly dated. Bathroom is also large and very comfortable. There was free broadband internet connection to the room which failed at times. Service was professional and helpful.
For the location and large room, I would definitely stay there again.
