I saw great reviews on this website and decided to stay at Tibet Hotel. I have stayed at Crowne Plaza Chendu, which was very comfortable but somewhat lacking in character.
So I ventured out of Chengdu's High Street. I am still happy with the result, but compared to the Crowne Plaza which I thought was barely five-star Tibet Hotel was a tourist-class, at most 3.5-star hotel.
The room looks very nice, with nice and quaint details. But the room I checked into felt a little musty. I ventilated for the whole afternoon but it was still musty so I called the front desk. They immediately changed me to a differet room on the same floor so that there's almost no hassle of moving. I still feel the air in this hotel is a little stuffy (again I am comparing it with Crowne Plaza). I think they could use a Dyson. Normally I would have been fine, but I just got over a cold and my throat was very sensitive to dust, so that may be why. The room I was moved to turned out to be much better but still I constantly needed ventilaiton.
They told me if I wanted a non-smoking room I had to face the street. I thought I would be high up enough to not hear much noise from the street, but I was quite mistaken.
I quickly got used to the buses and construction noises going on until wee hours of the night, but if you are a sensitive sleeper you might want to avoid rooms facing the street even it is higher than the 10th floor.
The first day, I was taking an afternoon nap because of my jet-lag, and I had the Do Not Disturb sign clearly turned on. But I suddenly received a very loud phone call which I picked up half asleep. A staff blurted out "do you need room cleaning!" I said no. This happens at most Chinese-run hotels. From my experience with both Chinese- and American- run hotels in China over the years, one thing I learned is Do Not Disturb does not mean "do not call or enter the room" at a Chinese-run hotels.
Then, the most bizarre thing happened--I was walking right outside the hotel browing at one of the small local shops. A bell staff who was non-Chinese and was English-speaking said hi to me and we started chatting in front of the small shop right behind the hotel. He basically told me that he had two children and because I didn't have any children my life was completely empty. I initially thought it was his culture and was going to let it go, but he kept on saying that I should have children, otherwise my life did not mean anything and it was an immoral thing to not have children.
I told him it was none of his business and that he might want to be careful when talking especially to non-Asian guests because that can easily be construed as sexual harassment. I told him being friendly and being rude were two different things. He never said sorry and abruptly went away.
That was a little shocking because i never expected to be told what to do with my life by a staff of a hotel I am supposed to be enjoying my vacation at.
If you can take these glitches as part of the adventure Tibet Hotel is your cup of tea.
I am glad I ventured out of Chunxi Rd, saw small shops and spoke to people in restaurants and shops in my truncated Chinese. That was really what made this stay nice.
But staying at Tibet Hotel made me realize the comfort and security of Crowne Plaza--or for that matter any other American-owned hotels in China--they may be boring, but I never had to beg a staff to understand what a "do not disturb" sign meanst at quite a few Crowne Plazas or Sheratons in China I stayed at. The noise level at those otherwise boring American owned hotels has been significantly lower than that of Tibet Hotel and other Chinese owned hotels. And ah, I have never had to ask a staff at Sheratons or Crowne Plazas in China to understand that a childless life can be morally justified!
Last thing, I am not particularly pro-Tibet, but you might want to bear in mind that Tibet Hotel's Tibet is PRC's Tibet. If you have strong opinions about Tibetan independence you might find this hotel not very satisfying. For an apolitical culture vulture like myself this aspect of the hotel was bearable.
Nice Tibetan-themed presentation throughout the hotel. Rooms very well done and exceedingly comfortable. Excellent 5-star value for money. Two-for-one dinner buffet in the hotel's restaurant was an excellent deal with varied and tasty options.
Hotel's only drawback is its location: even though you can get to the center of town in about 10-15 minutes by taxi, Tibet Hotel is too far off the beaten path if you want to get out and do some easy exploring. The neighborhood doesn't have much to offer, unfortunately.
We booked our trip through Ctrip.com where we got the room for RMB 587 per night including breakfast for 2. We requested a King bed non-smoking room. The taxi ride from the airport took around 30 min, cost RMB 60. The hotel couldn't guarantee a non-smoking room but said they would do "smoke-free treatment". We arrived around 11:30pm at night. The bell boy helped us with our bags. Checkin was fast and efficient. They even offered to have a "breakfast pack to go" since we have to leave the hotel at 5am the next day when breakfast hasn't started. They also offered to book a taxi for us to go to the airport the next morning.
The room was very nice and clean, bed was large (see traveler's photo), no smell of smoke, design was tibetan style. Bathroom was a highlight, really nice and clean with good shower and bathtub. Amenities were good as well (lotion, razor, toothbrush, comb, vanity kit, mending kit), nice fluffy towels, clean toilet.
TV has English channels (CNN, HBO, etc). The next morning checkout was just as quick and efficient. There were taxis waiting outside already and the trip to the airport took around 20 min and cost us RMB 70 (there's a RMB10 for highway fee).
I would definitely come back to this hotel. Rate was good and particularly good as a business hotel I think.
The problem with this hotel began as soon as we arrived. Rated as a 5 star this is realistically a 3 star. The rooms needed a refurb and the hotel staff's attitude was terrible. We asked for a non smoking room and was taken to 3 rooms before they eventually gave us a room on the non smoking floor. The 3 previous rooms stank of smoke even though they insisted they could take the ashtrays out and make it non smoking. Eventually given a room on floor 10 which was non smoking. The room looked onto the main road and with single glazing was very noisy. The room had the usual free toiletries, iron and board, kettle and a quirky bathroom where you could watch the world go by from your shower. As usual the bed was rock hard and no amount of vclankets on top of the mattress changed this. No doubt that when the hotel was first built it was a five star but with years of wear and tear and poor customer service a 3 star rating would be only fair. Breakfast was served in the downstairs coffee lounge and each morning you had to share your table with at least 8 other people who you did not know as they only had tables for ten. This was not so good as we all have different eating habits and enduring other peoples is not always what you want first thing in the morning. Breakfast was limited and the poorest selection throughout our Chinese journey. The staff could not of cared if you never had a drink and took there time to clear away the last peoples plates. We ordered room service one night which was fine but the milk we ordered tasted of water and cost £3. Reception was equally unhelpful and only the conierge desk redeemed the staff attitude. I would not stay here again, it is centrally located but not worth the poor standards and staff. Oh there is free umbrella hire if it rains and the gym was in a poor state and you are watched throughout your workout by the staff, half the equipment did not even work.
Excellent all round hotel. Great staff and fantastic large room. More like an appartment decorated witha mixture of Tibetan and art deco and very comfortable. Only 15 minutes walk from delightful Wenshu Temple and the newly developed old style tourist quarter nearby. There is a great Sichuan hot pot restaurant across the road opposite the hotel. Laundry is a bit expensive but there is a local laundry across the road which charges only a fraction of the price.
I stayed only 1 night and I appreciate this hotel, but it is very short to give a quotation on leisure and ambience !
Next time I will go to Chengdu, I will stay at the TIBET Hotel. Very nice hotel.
If this is a 4* hotel what could a 5* hotel provide that was better? Nothing as far as we could see.
This is a little bit of luxury in a big city. It is decorated in the Tibetan style and little notes or bookmarks are left on the bed each day explaining something about Buddhism or an explanation of the pictures in the room. There was even a simple walking route around the area. Nice touch. The rooms were clean and spacious with a TV on a rotating table that could be watched through a window from the bath or from the bed in the bedroom! Speakers in the ceiling in the bathroom let you hear what was on TV. Strangely the toilet had a glass wall looking into the shower and that had a glass wall looking out over the carpark which meant that we had to keep the blind down or slightly open at the bottom. We later returned to this hotel after a night in Emishan and it was like coming home. We again had a room overlooking the carpark (we had asked for that as it was quiet and got the sun) but our friends got one overlooking the road this time and that room was smaller (with no rotating TV). The breakfasts were yummy and after days of sightseeing we were too tired to go out to eat and had club sandwiches and chips or steaks - delicious after so many different Chinese meals and very reasonably priced. The staff were excellent, polite, friendly and smiling. The bar staff made excellent drinks and the business room ladies were helpful at changing money and letting us use the Internet. This is a definite 'must stay at' hotel and was one of the best we used in China.
This hotel was by far the best that we had stayed in during our two week stay in China. The beds and bath were extraordinary. The staff was delightful. The breakfast buffet was extraordinary as was the one night we had dinner. We stayed three nights in Chengdu, spending one day traveling to the Great Buddha and to the Panda preserve. The remaining days seeing the city. This hotel is in the old section of Chengdu. We were two older Western women traveling alone and without a tour guide. We found the people exceptionally friendly and felt very safe as we explored the city.
Three years ago this hotel and section of Chengdu gave us a great opportunity to see the non tourist areas of the city. We enjoyed visiting city markets, and local parks. Taxi's were easy to obtain going towards the downtown but were a little harder for the return trip. The is a large internet cafe nearby. Ask the staff. It was in the basement of an older building. Our favorite city when visiting the real China.
I didn't know what to expect for my first hotel stay in mainland China. The hotel was mostly chosen as a quick jumping off point for Wolong. I was more than suprised by the hotel's level of service and luxury. The helpfulness of all the staff encountered was above and beyond anything I have ever experienced at a hotel. We were there for just one day and didn't really sample the buffet. I was most thankful to find a desktop computer in our room. I'm not sure if the computer was an upgrade, or if there is one in every room. I think the one thing that stands out most about this hotel is the attitude of the staff and their helpfulness. The hotel is beautiful and clean, but I most remember the staff.
It is conveniently located close to the old town, where you can dinner some traditional food. Is is just a short walk away. Otherwise, it is little far from the shopping street and in rush hours you won´t find a taxi. We had to hop on one bus and be lucky to return to our hotel!
The staff is very polite and willing to help, nice hall, big room although needs renewing. The worse is the breakfast, i couldn´t find anything in european style. The best, the price, i even recomend not to book in advance and try to get a good price in reception.
Loved this hotel. A top of the range 4 star hotel. The rooms are huge as are the bathrooms. The rooms are furnished beautifully with all the expected amenities from a good 5 star hotel even thogh this is just a 4 star hotel.
I believe the hotel is not located in the best part of Chengdu. But the reason to be there is as a stop off point to Tibet or to Wolong to see the pandas or to see the Giant Buddha.
The hotel restaurants are very good and the hotel has one of the best breakfast buffets I have experienced in China. Even the beds are soft, unusual in a Chinese hotel.
This hotel was great all round, the restaurant was great the rooms were spacious and very comfortable, The bathroom was huge and spotless the business centre was excellent.
There was nothing to criticise about this hotel.
Some reviews put this hotel in a poor location but there were plenty of shops and good restaurants in the vicinity andI don't think there is a problem with the location at all.
We loved averything about this hotel, although the view from the rooms wasn't fantastic!
Across the road from the hotel is a great fun Sichuan hot pot restaurant with delightful and acommodating staff, well worth a visit.
This was one hotel on our trip around China. This hotel was by far the best we had stayed in. The entrance lobby was of a good size, and the reception area seemed very spacious. The one thing that stood out about this hotel was the excellent rooms. We stayed both times in a delux room. The first room being slightly larger than the second, but this made no difference. The beds and pillows were by far the nicest on this trip and we had a really good sleep that set us up for the long day ahead.
The bathrooms were exceptionally well fitted out and there was big fluffy towels to bury yourself in after a long day sightseeing.
We were only due to stay in this hotel for 1 night before we left for Woolong to see the Panda's. We were so impressed that we returned for another night before moving on to Shanghai.
We were unlucky to miss breakfast on our first morning, and we went to the restaurant to see if we could have a cup of coffee or a snack, the head waitress immediately arranged for us to have a breakfast, even though they were setting up for lunch. The food was really good and we had no complaints about presentation or service.
And as an extra plus, this hotel actually cashed travellers cheques, without the usual querying look by staff of other hotels.
It is definately a hotel that I would stay in again.
After positive reviews on ratestogo, tripadvisor and lonely planet I decided to book this trip as a treat after 3 weeks travelling China!
I arrived very tired and after a painfully slow check in I headed for the Health Centre to try out the sauna, steam room and jacusszi that looked amazing on their website.
I was appalled and disgusted to be told that I was not allowed to use any of the above facilities as I was a woman???? MEN ONLY APPARENTLY!
I complained to the Duty manager who said he could get me into another hotel to use their sauna but I would have to pay the equivalent of 25 euro!!!
Half the price of my room rate! I declined and was then told there was nothing else they could do....
Fantastic hotel - I stayed here having come back from working at Wolong Panda Reserve, and the room was absolutely fantastic - and the bathroom is to die for - myself and my room-mate's bathroom was out of this world, and other members of my party said that you could swivel the TV so you could watch it in the bathtub!
The hotel reception is impressive, a couple more couches to sit on would have been useful as there were 12 in our group. We ate in the hotel that night and the service was absolutely attrocious - everyone's food was brought at differerent times, the waiting staff were extremely rude, requests for drinks were ignored, despite pointing to the menu water was brought instead of vodka, it was as if the staff were determined to spoil our meal, and we were the only people in the dining room! However the reception staff were more than helpful, our bags were brought to our room extremely quickly, and the girl in the business centre was particularly helpful.
The hotel location is not ideal - I have travelled round China and this is the only place that I did not feel safe when out walking - indeed I walked for about 5 minutes then went back to the hotel. But the hotel itself is wonderful, it's just a shame about some of the staff and the area it's situated in.
The Tibet Hotel was very nice and a great value for the money. My children loved the bowling alley. I can't comment on the breakfast since we left too early in the morning to try it. The coffee shop was fine though the food is cooked to order so the wait was 35 minutes...somewhat long for kids. The rooms were nicely decorated and very comfortable. Internet was fine, too.
This is easily the nicest hotel I stayed at during my time in China. The rooms are modern, spacious, and beautifully decorated. The staff is courteous and extrememly professional, perhaps a tad too attentive for my tastes. The room attendant called three times to ask when she could stop by and clean my room after I turned on the "do not disturb" light.
The only small negative as noted by other reviewers is the somewhat inconvenient location (a 20-30 minute walk to the city center). Despite the location, I would gladly stay here again and happily recommend this hotel to my friends.
A beautiful hotel, with comfortable rooms. The air conditioning tended to peter out a bit during the night. Nice breakfast buffet, but a bit pricey. As with most hotels in China, we found the beds to be very hard, but this was easily remedied by asking the front desk for extra quilts to put under the sheets. Very clean. Our one regret is the location; it is quite far from the center of Chengdu. It is, however, not far from the Panda Sanctuary.
This hotel is a bit removed from the centre of Chengdu which seemed to be a disadvantage first. However, as I got to know the city I realised that the restaurants around the hotel are far better and more what you would want than the horrible fast-food joints around the centre.
The hotel is beautiful and the rooms are very different to your standard hotel room. The bathrooms are lovely and the towels were replaced during the day if used. It was spotlessly clean and the tv rotating into the bathroom was a fun (if not useless!) touch.
I'd definitely recommend this place in Chengdu. I think I paid about 500 RMB for a king room but can't fully recall - breakfast was included and had a reasonable selection so everyone would find something. Eat in the hotpot restaurant right across the road for a spicy experience!!!
We were very pleased with this hotel. The room was very nice. Well equipped with nice touches from wooden combs to a nice tea selection in the room. The bed was extremely hard but after our travels we didn't care as long as we were sleeping! The bathroom was large and modern- great decor. The breakfast buffet that was included was also very enjoyable.
In terms of facilities and standards, this was probably the best hotel we stayed at over the 3 weeks(and 7 locations). The room was very modern, especially the bathroom . The meals in the dining room gave a tremendous range of choice and the area around the hotel was very interesting.
We arrived late and needed an overnight hotel before flying to Tibet in the morning. For this, the hotel was a bit far from the airport, although I don't know if there are any closer alternatives. Also, can't speak for its location. The lobby looked nice, it was clean and had an attractive atmosphere. The bedroom was nicely decorated and the wood furniture was in nice condition. Two double beds were provided, but they were very hard. If I was staying longer, I would have requested blankets or extra duvets to be placed under the sheets. The bathroom was nearly the length of the room with glass shower stall and separate bathtub. The room was clean and well lit; linens of good quality. Overall, the room looked elegant without being stuffy.
First visit to China. Read the reviews on TripAdvisor and selected this hotel. It was an excellent choice. Large, clean room, open public areas and very helpful staff. As a unilingual Canadian, I was very thankful that the staff spoke English. Would recommend this hotel to any one.
I just used this hotel last week. Service is excellent, and rooms are clean. It's a little far from the shopping center but you may have no problem to visit around Chengdu because you can use a taxi anyway. I strongly recommend this hotel.
We stayed in an executive floor room, complete with a computer with internet access at no extra charge. The bathroom had a glass walk in shower, and a separate tub. Nice king bed, upscale decor. Safe in the room. Good hotel laundry. Hotel location is OK, but not great. Large breakfast buffet included western and Chinese food. Hotel has a bowling alley on third floor, get to bowl a game or two for free, though do have to pay for shoes. The executive club lounge was nothing special, did have cookies, juice and hard liquor, but no tonic water.
Booked a single room at this hotel in June 2006 for about 30 Euros, quite a bargain in Chengdu.
However, be aware that single rooms are no double rooms for single use (as stated), but rooms "cut in half": Ridiciously tiny. You have to do some sports to get from the bathroom to bed. Bathrooms are only equipped with one large towel. I had to order a small one. The room smelled like it has not had any visitors for month - awful. The windows are not up to Chinese 4 Star hotel standard, but with only one glass layer and therefore you can hear everything from outside (two four-lane streets)
Breakfast was a mess. Choices are limited, restaurant is crowded. Be careful when staying and having breakfast by yourself: As soon as you stand up to get some more from the buffet the waitress will take away everything from your tabel. I came back and had other people sitting on my table despite I have left my roomkey and some files left there.
The concierges are not helpful only reluctantly assisting you.
Internet connection in the room is quite fast, however it is interrupted every 30 minutes or so.
During my stay there was a huge group of teenagers and backpackers at the Tibet (Xizàng) Hotel - that's what it describes it best: An upscale youth hostel.
I stayed two nights at the Tibet Hotel in Chengdu. I must admit...I had some second thoughts about not staying at one of the "name" hotel chains (Hyatt, Sheraton, etc) in this part of the world, but I was pleasantly surprised. This is a great facility! The entire hotel seems to be newly-renovated...the rooms are small-ish, but very clean and contemporary. The staff is helpful and friendly, and there's always someone around who can speak enough English to help you out. The buffet breakfasts are big and full of variety...both American and Asian specialties abound.
A bit of a warning...the beds are hard as a rock (which I like), so if you don't like a firm mattress, you'll be unhappy. But overall, I'd recommend this place to anyone who's visiting Chengdu.
The best part...my room, with all taxes and breakfast included, was just $44 US. A terrific deal!
The Tibet was gorgeous. Not just the usual public areas but also the rooms were fantastic - very large, beautifully decorated and the bathroom was the most beautiful of any hotel room I've ever seen. It was very large with marble and granite with separate shower and bathtub. The last hotel we stayed at in California was the beautiful Fairmont Hotel in Santa Monica and it didn't compare with the Tibet Hotel.

Highly recommended hotel.
4 star hotel??? Maybe in the dark ages!
Changed hotel after the first night.
The Crown Plaza is a very good hotel in Chengdu.
The buffet breakfast was exceptional too.
