My husband and I were supposed to stay at the Garden hostel with our 7-year-old daughter in September of 2007.
When we arrived, we were driven around the town for about an hour before finally being deposited at the original guesthouse where we were told that the Garden hostel was not operating because Sim had been denied his papers (some political thing about being non-Chinese).
We were offered a family room (as booked) for one night but the guesthouse was full the rest of our stay. We were told we could stay at the Garden hostel anyway (unregistered) or they would put us up in a Chinese business class hotel.
With our daughter ill, we chose the second option.
The night we spent in the guesthouse was not pleasant. Our bathroom smelled of urine and the construction beside us went on until 4 in the morning. /However/, the rest of the guesthouse looked nice and I expect it would depend on the room you got and whether construction was going on as to the kind of stay you had.
Anyway - we were put up in a nearby hotel - nice and modern and clean for FREE. Sim recommended a doctor for our daughter, checked up on us personally several times and we did a day trip when she was feeling better through the guesthouse. All in all, we were happy with how we were treated and recommend the guesthouse based on that alone.
The staff at this hostel was better than excellent. Attentive, friendly, fun, and more. This was possibly one of the best places we have stayed, because of them we will be returning to Chengdu.
We have stayed in well over 300 hotels, guesthouse and hostels all over the world. This one still stands out as being one of the best. For a "hostel" it has impeccable rooms (the private doubles have a DVD player), wonderful shared areas and the attention of the owner is superb.
For the money it is impossible to find better. Find our profile and viist our website to see plenty of pictures.
My favourite hostel. Stay at this one and you will not be dissapointed. They have wonderful food at the restaurant, bar, great cozy common area, many computers. It is obvious that the owers have been travelling alot themselvs at they have thought of everything a backpacker need at a hostel!
Chengdu can be an enormous, hot, smoggy city, but Sim's is an honest oasis. This funky hostel has a soothing central garden and friendly, helpful, English- fluent staff. The rooms are clean with nice hot showers. The amenities are comprehensive (full restaurant, with excellent, inexpensive food; computer access; rec area, and laundry). The travel desk is awesome, arranging from tours to the Opera and pandas to multi-day treks to Tibet and Everest basecamp for very reasonable prices. We went with our three teenage boys and they never wanted to leave the grounds. Overall, could not choose a better value in Chengdu
Perhaps our expectations were high, based on the raves in this forum. For 150rmb we got a spartan square that was the worst room we stayed in during our three weeks. Well worn and griity to walk on.
The room faced the street and traffic noise flowed all night and ramped up again from 5 in the morning.
The fruit in the room was a nice touch. The breakfast options (extra charge) are good, tasty, and well priced. Most people having breakfast were of an age to be doing their second phase of backpacking. All foreigners.
We had booked for an additional night but cancelled in the morning. There was disinterest from the reception staff to our cancellation or the cause for it.
I give it a "teriible rating", rather than OKAY, as in my view if you can't sleep the rest of the service is irrelevant.
If you do book here, be sure you get confirmation of a quiet room.
We arrived in Chengdu having no idea where to stay. We looked in Lonely Planet and saw Sims was highly recommended.
This place is aiming to be the best hostel in China - We think its already there! its fantastic! I cannot say enough about this place. We payed about 120 RMB for a lovely double room. With free fruit platter on arrival - room was made up everyday with fresh towels. Food at the hostel was great and very cheap.
The hostel itself was beautiful too. Its a traditional Chinese building with a pseudo Japanese style all the way though it. Its a very Cozy and peaceful atmosphere complete with ping-pong table, dart board, bike hire and tour booking agency.
If you go to Chengdu - stay here - you won't regret it! We were going to stay in Chengdu a couple of nights and almost stayed a week.
We stayed here for a few days. We loved our time here and the staff were really helpful. We ended up going for a wonderful few days in Western Sichuan on the recommendation of one of the employees. It turned out to be the highlight of our trip.
The guesthouse is very comfortable and clean. The staff is great and they helped us with booking airling tickets and tours around the city.
I would recommend this guesthouse to my friends in the future
We visited Chengdu the first week of August 2007. They pick us up form the train station at no charge which I think is great considering that you come in to a new city.
At first is hard to sense the atmosphere of the place, a lot of back packers ready to check in and more people in the travel agency trying to schedule tours around the area. Staff was friendly.
We even have a bbq night that was very delicious and cheap.
We stayed in a double room with bathroom and AC. everything s perfectly label and marked with instructions of how to be used. The room was simple but comfortable and very clean. We definitely recommended .
Only inconvenient was the construction side, e aware of what room you are going to get the house is pretty big so if you book in advance you may have the chance to be away from the noise.
Fantastic place hidden away in Chengdu. They have nice rooms, okay bathroom laundry facilities with good food, a geat bar, lovely eating areas a glass bottomed sitting area over a man made stream, roaming piglets and kittens, and a great atmosphere. Good prices for accomadation and tours. Full of great tips for travellers.

Best hostel of our 18 days trip through China.
One of the nicest hostels I have ever been to!
you guys are great!
I think if the hostel was closer to the dentre it would have been better.

A gem of a hostel in a gem of a city... a truly great find in the city of Chengdu.
Although the hostel is right in the centre of the city the hostel is so nice it is worth staying here anyway.
