My wife and I stayed at the Wenjun solely based on the reviews on tripadvisor. We stayed 4 nights, and had mixed feelings about the hotel.
We had originally booked a western style room ( double/twin - cant remember), but when we checked in, the reception staff ( lovely people) said that they had upgraded us to a family room, they showed us to room 201. The room itself was OK, there was no bath - just shower. But, the view from the room - whoa...... there was a door that opened onto a miniscule enclosed balcony which in turn looked out onto the front of the hotel and therefore the main road. The balcony was enclosed because there was some sort of false roof over the ground floor. This formed a sort of angled shelf on which every piece of rubbish had been thrown - also, because it was raining, the gutters ?? ran onto this slope - not a very pleasant sight ( I know, I know - I took video of it, but no stills ). Had to insist we had another room.
We were shown to room 310, which was altogether different - this had a seperate living room ( with TV and PC ) accessed direct from the covered walkway overlooking the courtyard, the bedroom ( with TV ) was to the rear of the living room ( door in between) and there was a small dressing area between the bedroom and the bathroom. the bathroom had a spa bath ( way hey!! ) but the pressure from the hot water was so poor, it took 45 minutes to cover the jet nozzles - so only tried it once ( used the shower attachment instead).
This room was bliss ( apart from the rock hard mattress, which I understand could be common in China ), we never heard a thing, even being next to the stairs.
The staff could not have been more helpful and pleasant, never had fault with anyone. We had room service a couple of times, which meant the Chef/waiter?? climbing the stairs - at the end of our stay, I tipped him personally - he was so grateful/embarrased, he asked the reception staff what it was for and I had to explain that it was for the great service he had provided.
The fridge in reception has bottles of beer for sale - 1 pint bottles of Bud and Tsing tao for 10 CNY each (80pence GB), we had BLT with fries off the menu for 18CNY (£1.50 GB) - so not expensive at all.
We booked 2 trips to the Panda research ( our prime reason for visiting Chengdu ) through the Hotel travel agency at 80CNY each person each trip. This got us a private car, and the services of Hu Sheu Dong ( hope this is spelt right ) our driver, who stayed with us and showed us around the Panda Centre. You can do it cheaper by taxi, but we had a nightmare trying to flag a taxi down at 6.00pm in the rain, in the rush hour - so we were put off using taxis.
The hotel is well placed for Qingyang Temple and park, in fact just across the road. We went to the Sichuan Theatre there ( tea, comedy, music and face changers - fantastic ) - it took 5 mins walking from hotel.
At the bottom of the road ( turning left out of the hotel ) is Biahutan park, which has a nice bridge crossing the river to it.
Turning right out of the hotel, you come to a major road, turn right again and 30 minutes later, you are in Tianfu Square, center of Chengdu complete with statue of Chairman Mao ( and of course - shops ) - on the way, you will have passed Renmin Park.
So, all in all, the hotel is not badly located - I think 30 minutes walk is quite reasonable, seeing as you are soaking in all the sights.
As I said before, we could not fault the staff, they are genuinely pleased to see you, help you, talk with you.
The rooms are basic, but the price is cheap - as I said, we have mixed feelings about the hotel, but on reflection would recommend it to family and friends.
If you stay here - ask about the city map - we were here for 3 days before we realised they had them. Only 5 CNY, but they keep them in a drawer - did advise them to display them.
This is a downscale budget hotel. The cost is cheap. Rooms are clean but sparse with a computer in the room if you need it. The beds are the usual hard Chinese beds. There is no elevator so be ready to walk up the stairs. Rooms here range from dorms style to private rooms.
The room I had was a Chinese standard. It had a bedroom, a den, and a bath room. They were all simple and basic, and exactly what I needed.
What sets this place apart is the staff (with one exception). They are very helpful. Despite a Travel Agency in the lobby run by the staff, they had no problem helping me arrange my own travel to Leshan. The only one not helpful was Tony, who just seemed not to care at times.
Overall, this is a great place to stay and explore Chengdu and its surrounings.
The staff was very helpful and spoke English well. They were able to give accurate directions and bus numbers to any place we wanted to go. The dorm rooms and the entire hostel was very clean and welcoming.
I had a lot of trouble with booking this hotel. They required a deposit and I was unable to do this through the website withmy visa card. I evetually managed to do it via Paypal. The hotel initially denied they had received my payment but when I sent through my confirmation from Paypal they siad they had received it. I also booked a car for a day through the hotel in advance which cost 650Y for the day and also required a deposit and this time I had no trouble sending it through paypal.
I had the hotel arrangean airport transfer for 70Y and they were waiting when I arrived. I also got this on he way to the airlport. Check in was easy and quick and I was shown to my room on the 4th floor. As others have noted there is no elevator but this didn't bother me as I knew this in advance.
The room was lovely. Very large and with nice antique style chinese furnishings. There was a computer which I used for 20Y a day and enjoyed the movies that were on the computer for this price (Make sure the movie you select has the end on it - I watched a cliffhanger which had the last few minutes missing!)
The bathroom was large and clean with the exception of a few mould spots in the corner of the shower. The towels were pretty thin and worn but there were plenty of them.
The bed like many in China was extremely hard. I took the cussion from the double seat near the computer and put it under the sheet which meant I had great nights sleep there.
The only thing I didn't like about the room was that there was no natural light. The windows looking out on to the courtyard had permanent blockouts on them so even if you opened the curtains there was no light. There was a window near the computer but this didn't shed light into the main section of the room.
The restuarant had a mix of chinese and westrn food and was OK but not great. The breakfast was good value for 20Y and again had a mix of chinese and western. I got room service one night and that arrived quickly and was hot. There is no way of charging expenses to your room so you need to pay for everything as you use it.
Overall i loved staying at this hotel. It was charming and centrally located and very inexpensive for the room provided.
Was initially going to pass through Cheng Du, but ended up staying for well over two weeks.
For 10RMB, it's as cheap as you are likely to get. Rooms are big, nice communal balcony where you can relax, staff are friendly, everything is pretty clean.
This place doesn't get many foreigners though, which is actually good for me, as I am learning the language, but depends what you are looking for. The staff generally speak decent English though.
I have just returned from travelling all over China as a single parent traveller with my 7 year old daughter.
In all of our stays and stops, Wenjun was the best accomodation. The staff were helpful and efficient. The level of English was also very good.
I reserved a room through their website knowing approximately when I would arrive, but not entirely, and Vicky, the one who corresponded with me via email and subsequently took care of us during our stay, guaranteed me a room would be help, and then upon our arrival, the price had also been dropped by $50.00 RMB of what I had reserved for. I told her I was prepared to pay what we had agreed, and she wouldn't hear of it.
We stayed 3 nights, and then planned to head west to Mt. Emeishan for a couple of days, and they allowed me to store our huge backpack for FREE until we returned on our way back. That was VERY helpful! We ended up staying one more night on the way back, and Vicky then helped us secure flights to Guiling from Chengdu at a very good price, and very quickly.
There is Wi-Fi available in the courtyard, but I also found that it worked in our room.
The rooms are spacious, very clean, and have an adjoining study (desk, loveseat, table, and desktop computer for $20.00 RMB if you choose to use it), as well as clean bathroom with lots of counter space.
I would definitely recommend this accomodation to budget and other travellers alike.
The breakfasts that were available were basic and very affordable, but there were also many supermarkets and fruit stores around as well.
People's Park was beautiful and at the end of the street, and the street itself was a wonderful experience also.
Last note, taxis are very reasonable to most attractions from this location, and about $100.00 RMB from airport to this location including tolls.
Just spent two nights at this charming hotel and I have to say that it was worth it!
I am a budget traveller and was very pleased to find the quality of accomodations given the price. The rooms are clean with television and air conditioning, and the private bathrooms are spacious (though ours was a little dark). There are 4 floors that overlook a central courtyard where you can gather with friends over a meal, drinks, or play traditional Chinese board games.
Rooms also have free internet access if you bring a network cable (wireless internet access was not available at the time).
Finally, the location is terrific, as it is located on a street that is famous for its antique, old-style charm with tea-houses, hot-pot restaurants, and foot massage parlours. It is approximately 10 minutes walk from People's Garden and 20 minutes walk from the downtown shopping district. However, it is only 2 minutes walk from the nearest bus station which can take you to any of the above within 10 minutes.
We stayed here one night and found it charming! The staff was very nice and eager to assist wherever needed. Breakfast in the outdoor courtyard was very relaxing. The location is on the Old Town main street which would give you great access to shops etc if you have time. We saw the pandas right outside of town and that was wonderful and the Leshan Buddha which I will never have to see again!! We went to a changing of the masks performance along with shadow show and some other performances at night that was worth seeing.
Great location! Right next to the Tibetan quarter which had a wonderful atmosphere and some of the best food around! I would strongly recommend trying a Tibetan restaurant! The rooms were very spacious and the ensuite bathrooms were really nice!
I stayed at this hotel for 3 days and it was the highlight of our trip. (Well... our Shanghai hotel was pretty nice but it was 3 times the cost of this one). This hotel probably sits on the nicest, most interesting street in Chengdu. Request a room with a balcony overlooking the street. We got a suite for $38 a night with a sitting room and balcony. The staff could NOT have been kinder or more helpful. One of the ATMs near the hotel ate my ATM card and they negotiated with the bank on a SUNDAY to get my card back. I would have been screwed had it not been for the diligence of the staff. They also were great tour and travel bookers. Do yourself a favor and book the ride to and from the airport. It was fantastic. We even loved the breakfast which was Chinese buffet style and about 50 cents. Yum. Great food is to be had nearby. Close to a main street where you can easily catch a cab.
We stayed at the Wenjun Mansions in January 2008. The hotel was in a good location and had friendly English speaking staff. However the rooms were fairly tired and basic, and not well heated (it gets very cold in Chengdu in winter). The heater in our room only worked spasmodically despite the efforts of the staff to get it to work properly. We nearly froze to death on the first night. It is worth noting that the hotel does not have an elevator. This was a problem for my mother who is 82. Our rooms were on the fourth floor and she found it quite difficult negotiating the steep staircase. The hotel staff did offer to change her room to the second floor on the second day but by then we had decided to change hotels. The staff are helpful and speak some English and the location is great but Wenjun Mansions offers rooms that are similar to those offered in a tired, two star Australian motel and there are better hotels in Chengdu at lower rates and equally professional staff.
He wrote the names of destinations in Chinese characters for us on little notes to make it easier for us to get around vis bus & taxi. The rooms are fantastic! very large, comfortable and of course in the charming old style Chinese fashion. The street at night is breathtaking with all the red lanturns lighting up the sky.
The location is very close to everything in Chengdu.
The buffet breakfast every morning was very good, affordable and fresh. We even booked day trips through Dreams travel which was very convenient. The Woolong overnight trip to see the Pandas is a must!
Would stay here again and recommend it to everyone.
What a wonderful place to stay, the most comfy beds in China! Unreal spacious rooms, clean and a terrific breakfast, not a lot of western food on the breakfast menu but enought to enjoy a great start to the day and coffee freshly ground and brewed! I really overdosed on coffee!
Considering it is in right in the middle of a touristy Chinese Street it was quiet. Lots of Chinese restaraunt around it, many did'nt have English menu's but the staff who also could'nt speak English were more than accommodating and helpful. Staff at the Wenjun are terrific and always one English speaking on duty.
Walking distance to some of the lovely parks.
This was the best Hotel we stayed at in three weeks in China and l would go back tomorrow! Wonderful!
I chose this hotel after reading that it was top-rated on this site and had an English-speaking tour desk. My husband and I were impressed and will definitely stay here again if we go back to Chengdu. The staff were very friendly, competent, and helpful (and all spoke decent English). The rooms were spacious, clean, and nicely decorated. It's not a luxury hotel, but it is much nicer than we expected for the low price we payed. The location is convenient, as it's near the center of the city. The street the hotel is located on is also very charming. It is lively, with shops and restaurants and buildings with traditional Chinese roofs.
We booked two bus tours through their travel desk. If you don't mind roughing it, these tours are an extremely cheap way to travel. A four-day bus trip to HuangLong and Jiuzhaigou including transportation, hotels, meals, and entrance fees only cost about $200 USD per person. Just be prepared.. many of the toilets where the bus stopped didn't even have doors. The food was basically the same every meal, every day (the Chinese people wouldn't even eat some of it) and we got stomach aches several times. Also, the guides didn't speak a word of English and we were the only foreigners on the bus. But if you're up for the adventure, it can be fun.
Your first place in a new country after an intercontinental flight is particularly important as various items like transfer, money, getting around are involved. I came in with the direct KLM flight from Amsterdam and had made a booking through the hotel website based on the previous review. I wanted to be in a traditional house surrounded by restaurants and parks, as to avoid having to plan going out. The booking was confirmed by return and private airport pick-up offered for Y70 which I accepted.
The Mansion was just perfect: thanks to the pick-up I was immediately at the hotel, was given exactly the Chinese style King size room I had wished on the 4th floor with the lovely view on the yard and got one hour foot massage ordered through the reception - one of the best I've ever got.
The reception offered spontaneously a regional magazine in English, offered a free taxi to the railway station and an invitation to dinner was very politely answered: "Oh, thank you, Sir, tonight I'll be on duty. Would you like that we have dinner brought in for you?".
Should you go there, please greet the reception from a happy traveller!
This was my first experience of a Chinese Hotel. We wanted somewhere different - not a clone of European hotels. This is a friendly hotel, on a wonderful street. Make sure you get a room with a balcony overlooking the courtyard and sit outside in the evening. The street is quite busy but is one of the most interesting in Chengdu and there are two parks close by where you have to visit in the early morning. Trips to the Panda Breeding Centre and the Sichuan opera can be arranged. Du Fu's cottage, and Green Ram temple are also quite close. Breakfast is an "all you can eat" affair and a very cheap addition to your stay. The hotel will pick you up from the airport which is very helpful. I recommend this wholeheartedly.
My husband and I and a friend enjoyed our 8-day stay at the Wenjun Hotel in Chengdu. I researched other accomodations in Chengdu, and we found the Wenjun to be a very good value. The Wenjun has single and double rooms as well as 4-bed and 6-bed suites. The staff is friendly and helpful. The reception staff speaks pretty good English. We were able to check and send email on the two computers in the lobby, although the connection was quite slow. Our rooms were clean and comfortable. The Wenjun is a charming traditional Chinese-style courtyard hotel. Breakfast was served almost every morning in the courtyard. On the few other days, the receptionist arranged food to be made specially for us for breakfast. Our rooms were on the 4th floor, with a lovely view of the courtyard and Qintai Road. Qintai Road and all of the shops/buildings, including the Wenjun, were renovated several years ago to reflect the styles of the Qing and Ming dynasties. There are shops, restaurants and bars along the street. Wenhua Park can be entered from Qintai Rd., where we practiced taiji every morning. There are several tea houses in the park serving tea and beer. Baihuatan Park is near one entrance to Qintai Rd. We ate snacks, drank beer and watched World Cup Soccer in a outdoor bar/restaurant in Baihuatan Park several nights. The hotel can arrange many tours, as it is affliliated/owned by Dreams Travel. The hotel arranged a driver for us for several out-of-city trips (not tours). One evening our toilet would not flush. We phoned the reception desk, and within 20 minutes a staff member was there with a plunger to fix it. If we ever return to Chengdu, we would stay at the Wenjun Hotel. We booked our rooms directly with the Wenjun through their website, which took us several tries.
Reviews
The staff spoke excellent English and were extremely helpful.
The hotel stay was oke.
We stayed 4 nights in the chinese style room.

Good Value.....not sure what people on trip advisor

to put down a deposit (the more nights, the bigger the
deposit????) Also a deposit for the electronic safe???
Next door is travel bureau, with free maps. Buffet breakfast
eggs were stone cold, and everything else lukewarm.Food
ordered from the kitchen was great and fairly priced. Computers
in room were great, with fast connection.Staff very friendly and efficient. P/u service to/from airport at 70rmb was prompt
and courteous.Panda research center tour at 80rmb,return transportation and entry ticket, was well worth it. Great location.

But if you're up for the adventure, it can be fun.
good location, comfortable and spacious rooms, very friendly staff with excellent english, trips and flight tickets etc. could be booked in the hotel
Wenjun Hotel Review
