Just returned from a two day break in Chengdu with my wife and daughter aged 3 .5 where we stayed in the Crowne Plaza on Zong Fu Lu . Our main purpose was to visit the Giant Panda Research base basically to catch a glimpse of the giant pandas.

The hotel is in a great a location, very near centre of town , easy walking distance of Tianfu Square and Renmin park . The hotel rooms are a bit on the small side and basic but clean enough with reasonably comfortable beds but we were only there for two nights so it wasn't that much of a hassle . Staff were very helpful and the concierge staff were extremely helpful in helping to organise transport to the Panda base . Breakfast selection was good . Overall the hotel was good value .

The panda experience was the highlight of our trip , we all loved it . We saw adult pandas , cubs and very young pandas , all being very active . Tip , go early morning as by mid to late morning the pandas are all sleepy and don't move about much . We even got to hold a red panda for a photo shoot , ok sounds corny but well worth the 50 RMB to do it . We spent about three hours there , it is about 30 minutes away from the hotel by taxi . At night time we went to Sichuan Opera at the Jinjiang theatre which was excellent in terms of the performance and the variety ! Saturday morning in Renmin park was well worth the visit to experience Chinese people relaxing and enjoying themselves.

First class hotel, the official rating is five stars but I give it 4+ because tear and wear showed up in the room and corridor. The air conditioning (cooling) had been switched off for the winter, which meant that the room was too warm. The mini bar was warm and filled with soft drinks--not a beer lover's dream.

Crowne Plaza (ex. Holiday Inn) is located in the dead center of Chengdu, close to the large pedestrian zone with its modern shops. The buffet restaurant on the first floor is extremely clean and serves great breakfasts. The grill restaurant on the 25th floor is not worth its prices. No problems with traffic noise. Extremely friendly English-speaking staff.

One of several hotels I stayed in during a 2 week business trip around China. This hotel was clean and neat. The room was moderate in size. The lobby was impressive. The service was great. The breakfast was good. Over all not the best hotel of the trip but not the worst by far.

A nice interior, a great breakfast, a very good location in town but the best of all, an incredibly helpful and knowledgable reception staff and concierge desk. Thanks to their tips and arrangements, we saw even more of Chengdu and the region than I would have expected in two days and had the best hotpot in town! Having left shortly before the earthquake, I was pleased to read on the hotel's website that all staff (and guests) were safe. I hope that happier times will return to Sichuan in the foreseeable future so that I can visit again.

This is a great hotel, in a fantastic location. The staff are amazing and were unbelievably helpful. The room was great, clean and quiet. Breakfast was included and was very good with an amazing variety. We had nothing to complain about at this hotel.

Tour desk helped us out getting cabs etc, writing things out for us in Cantonese, but when we were going to a Tibetan restaurant they wrote out the order in Tibetan as well.

This hotel is a gem and i would recommend it to anyone and we got it for a good price on WOTIF.com

This is a great hotel. It was my second time there and I like the quality of the rooms as well as the location. Being a gold member of the Priority club I was lucky to be offered a free upgrade to a suite. I would have given this review 5 stars if it wasn't for a very annoying glitch.

i am travelling for 7 weeks and regularly need the hotel to do some laundry and I have seen the most ridiculous prices for laundry ever (more even than other Crown Plaza hotels. It is actually cheaper to throw away your clothes and buy new ones than have them cleaned. The worst example is socks. The cost for washing a pair of socks in 25CNY!!!! (about $3) compared to 10CNY for the next Crown Plaza that I visited in Sanya. For 25CNY I can buy 10 pairs of socks at the Ya Xiu market in Beijing!

Other than this it was a great stay although my room was generally too hot.

Crown Plaza Hotel is a very good hotel with convenient transportation and many beautiful shopping malls nearby. The hotel room is very spacious, clean and tidy; the facilities in the room all work very well. Hotel breakfast is delicious and fresh. I will stay in this hotel again next time I come to Chengdu.

We stopped in Chengdu for the pandas but were surprised to discover the nice city. The hotel has a perfect location, just a few steps from the pedestrian part of town with great shopping and dining. It has beautiful rooms and public areas. A great choice in Chengdu.

i stayed in this hotel for few days early december during biz trip in chengdu. I was said was pretty impressed by the courtesy of the receptionist, comfortable room and strategic location of the hotel. The receptionist is able to speak English, very polite and looks very eager to help out whenever i asked for help.

My room was at 12th floor, the room is quite big with king sized bed, a writing table, complimentary fruits, TV, rest chair, cabinet, fridge, safety deposit box, etc. Toilet amenities provided is more than enough, they provide even the toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, comb, and many more. The bed and pillow is superb, very soft and clean, i have very good rest throughout the nights. Air conditioning is good and room is quite. The only thing i felt is left out is the TV, it is the old bulky type instead of flat LCD screen.

Location of the hotel is very good, it is about 5 minutes walking distance to the famous shopping street called "ChunXi road" where lots of shops and restaurants.

After a long night spent on the train from Beijing, and a really (really!) bad stay at another hotel in Chengdu, I decided to splurge and stay for one night at the Crowne Plaza. It was definitely what the doctor ordered. From my initial encounter with reception to check-out, staff here sure know how to make a guest feel welcome.

Location: Others have commented that the Crowne Plaza is difficult to find, but I'd have to disagree. I walked there from the train station and had no trouble finding it without any aid or direction from locals. It is located on one of the main streets in Chengdu, right near many great shopping and dining areas. You will feel safe staying anywhere in the vicinity.

Room: The most comfortable bed I experienced in China. Rooms were clean, spacious. There was plenty of room at the work station and free internet was provided. There were several English television stations, as well as complimentary soda/juice in the minibar. Bathrooms are elegant and come with plenty of toiletries. When I left for the Panda Research Centre, a bowl of fresh fruit was placed in my room as well as a beautiful paper cut-out wishing me "sweet dreams" on my pillow. There is power in the details. Little touches that made me feel grand. Breakfast is included. Western and Eastern dishes are provided and staff at the restaurant are very, very efficient. There is a pool, spa located at the hotel but I didn't have time to enjoy it.

Staff: There was one young male working the reception desk the day I stayed there (Dec6/07) that was truly exceptional. He helped me with any queries I had and always asked me if I needed anything and if I was enjoying my stay. He also managed to remember and pronounce my last name correctly every time he saw me (not an easy feat, as few people in my home country can say my last name properly).

At 1400 Yuan a night (approximately $200 CDN), it's very very pricey for China but well worth it if you need to feel rejuvenated.

Great place – if you can get there.

Many reviewers love this hotel, and I do too. Skipping past the logistical problems getting there (please see plea below), the hotel has excellent amenities and professional staff, and if you’re lucky, good food. It’s a wonderful haven, especially in hot August.

The room:

Spacious, clean, comfortable, well-airconditioned, our 20th floor room overlooked a busy commercial main street. The room's minibar included some free juice and soft drinks, and the hotel even offers a “shopping list” of firm to soft pillows, which you gotta love. We had squishy feather pillows and were perfectly content. The usual nice bathrobes and slippers are offered, though towels were thin compared to the luxurious fluffy hotels of Astor House in Shanghai. Bonus: free internet in the room.

The staff:

Welcoming, friendly, courteous, from the front to the back. The staff at the front door were even more knowledgeable than the “gold key” concierge, helping with more than the luggage – finding restaurants, maps, taxis and always sending you off or welcoming you back with a smile and an open door.

The food:

Before you eat at the hotel, take a walk around the block. There’s terrific and inexpensive street food to be had, including beef on a stick, hot dog on a stick, tofu on a stick (!), etc, and more if you can figure out the ordering system. There’s also a decent Peking duck restaurant acoss the street, lit up like Vegas at night.

In the hotel, the first restaurant impressions weren’t good. Tired the first day, we went to the only restaurant offering breakfast in the hotel, the usual all you can eat buffet (100 yuan here), but opted for the a la carte Chinese breakfast at 60 yuan each. We asked for pork congee, and got chicken, delivered like an old Whoopie Goldberg skit, served with big oven mitts, only to discover your meal is actually stone cold. They were apologetic, but it leaves you wondering how a place like the Hyatt can serve cold rice jook.

A shining star: Do not miss the excellent Sichuan restaurant on the 2nd floor (not owned by the hotel), that cheers you with flavorful, exciting, and beautifully-presented dishes. Check out the chef’s specialties and the Sichuan dishes: tea smoked duck, double cooked pork, diced rabbit homestyle and Sichuan vegetables. For a spicier kick, try the the baby cuttlefish and braised fish with chili and pepper King Fook style (both come served in a dangerous red chili sauce.)

My plea:

No one at the Chengdu airport knows Crowne Plaza. I had the address, 31 Zong Fu street, and even translating it into Chinese confused the airport tourist staff. They quote me a 100 yuan fee to be delivered to the hotel, even though they don’t know where it is. We set off, eventually turning onto Zong Fu street and then into a large circular plaza with 2 hotels, where our intrepid taxi driver drops us at the wrong hotel (another quarter turn around the circle). Apparently, until last year, the Crowne Plaza was a lowly Holiday Inn until this year. Important tip: Know your hotel brand “families”.

(note that the return taxi fare from hotel to the airport was only 52 yuan, so the airport folks are not only without knowledge, they also charge for it.)

**Can I please enter a universal plea to hotels in China to list NOT ONLY their English name but also their Chinese name in both Chinese characters and in pinyin. Thanks for all the great tourist advice to pick up the hotel's business card to “return me to XXX hotel” but for those of us arriving at the airport, without business cards in hand, Chinese taxis do not necessarily understand roman names or numerals. by all means, have the hotel phone number handy, as the taxi driver's do often have their own cell phone.

The hotel was an average hotel even though it's a five star hotel in Chengdu. It was clean, but nothing extraodinary. The first night my room faced the front entrance/ main road. It was incredibly hot. I called the front desk and all they offered to do was bring a fan up. It was still way too hot with the fan. The next morning I made them move me to the otherside of the hotel (as did my collegues). What a difference. The rooms reminded me more of a Holiday Inn than a five star hotel, but it was fine. They had room service, minibar, interent access and a workout facility.

Well, I have to admit I'm a little biased after staying the in the Grand Hyatt in Beijing...but to the best of my knowledge that property represents a "5 star" hotel and this Crown Plaza pales in comparison. I'm sorry but for a 5 star rating the hotel should have a little more razzle dazzle--or at the very least, remarkably clean and up to date rooms, not your typcial boring tube TV shacked up in an armoire, a ragged slip mat in the bathtub, etc, etc. And the hotel staff should at least have a limited command of the English language...given it is Chengdu and somewhat remote. Maybe the 5 star rating came by association--there are some nice upscale stores next to it such as Louis Vatton. The gym is a hodge podge of old Life Fitness weights and aged cardio equipment (cirqa early 90s bikes). And the pool, well,...I've seen Hotel 6s in the states that would rival it. The hotel's only saving grace would be a decent Japanese restaurant with a good view of the city, free Internet and shoeshine, and a spacious (although vacuous) lobby. Nice try Holiday Inn, but you can't escape your name sake...a poor attempt at reaching the upper crust of society or in my case a disgruntled business traveler....

I spent two nights on business in June, 2007, at the Crowne Plaza in Chengdu, China. My room was on one of the executive floors (21), so this review reflects that upgraded experience.

Five stars in China vary in quality. This one deserves its stars. For American/European guests, the westernized features may make the hotel less 'authentic' than some others, but they are also quite welcome. The firm but cushioned bed and the down pillows, for instance, were welcome; many Chinese hotels provide beds that feel like a sheet placed over plywood. I really appreciated the complimentary soft drinks in the minibar. In addition, since the tap water is not potable, the hotel provides complimentary water, but do be careful to take the bottles that are marked as such and not the Evian, which is pricy. Finally, if you stay on the exec floors, you get free happy hour in the exec lounge; soft drinks, alcohol (beer, wine, or spirits) and light appetizers are provided. The lounge offers a variety of international papers, including the Herald Trib.

The room was adequate in size. The bathroom was well appointed. As is usually true in China for this level of hotel, the bathroom floors and counters are granite/stone, and there are complimentary bath things ranging from razors and toothbrushes to conditioner. Although my room had a thermostat, I was unable to control the temperature at all, so it remained overly air conditioned. There is good internet access, with an American adaptor supplied; I was up and running on my Mac within about 30 seconds. Bandwidth supported audio iChat, but not video; email speed was good. The safe in my room was not working.

There is a surprisingly good fitness center, with a woman who spots you while you lift weights (whether you want it or not). The equipment is well maintained, and includes free weights, machines, mats, bikes, and treadmills.

Breakfast is available in the executive area (22nd floor, if I recall correctly), which I recommend if you are staying on one of those floors. The service is good, with eggs cooked to order and adequate western breakfast (I love most Chinese food, but not for the first meal of the day); there is also a modest selection of Chinese breakfast food from congee to Chinese breakfast donuts.

In sum, this hotel is well appointed, and offers thoughful services and comforts. I highly recommend it if you are in Chengdu on business and need these things. Of course, if you are looking for a less western experience, you will not find it here.

A great hotel in a very convenient location, just across the road from large shopping street with pedestrian mall.

Day spa within hotel took a bit of finding, but it is located in the basement on B2 level and is much, much cheaper than the posh beauty salon next door. We had excellent foot massages there and i also had my hair blowdried. English was very sparse in the spa, but we managed to communicate well.

Dinner in the restaurant was very average and service slow. We opted to eat a la carte, but they also have an excellent buffet.

Would definitely stay here again

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The staff is very friendly, the location is super convenient, and the free breakfast buffet was high quality. The rooms are clean, but unimpressive, although the bathroom was really nice. The lobby was beautiful and the view from the Sky Bar is amazing. You can walk across the street to a major shopping area or take a short taxi ride to almost anywhere.

I would definitely stay here again.

An excellent hotel. Right in the middle of a bustling shopping area. The staff were very curtious and helpful. Our room was huge with a king size bed, quality linens, all the regular amenities - coffee/tea maker, refridgerator, tv, bathrobes, slippers. The breakfast which was included in the price was extremely good. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Stayed- August 26-28th 2006

Price- US$107 incl bfast ( thru wotif.com)

Location-Good

Facilities- Excellent

Staff- Good

Overall great experience, Room was wonderful- the bed and linen were lovely- high thread count sheets, selection of pillows.

Staff friendly and helpful. Food great, the buffet breakfast- they thought of everything-even espresso coffee which we found hard to find in China and when we did, it cost the earth!

A new day spa opened next to the hotel in the posh shopping centre, they had cheap deals for hotel guests so I got pampered in lovely surroundings for a much cheaper price than the salon in the basement of the hotel. The day spa had adverts in the bathroom of our room.

Stayed at the Crowne Plaza for 2 nights after reading the reviews, was very dissappointed with the quality of rooms, the lobby was large and impressive, lots of marble and staff everywhere, but the rooms are dated and when I asked at the front desk they did agree with me saying that since they opened 9/ 10 years ago they have not been renovated. My rate was over RMB 950 which included breakfast. Room size too was tight. After staying at the JW Marriot in Chongqing, wow this hotel is the business. I thought all 5 star hotels in China were of this quality.

The lobby bar was under renovation, breakfast was a shambles the first day as staff looked miserable and stressed out, but a noticable improvement on the second day.

The best thing about this hotel is its location; slap bang in downtown shopping street.

This place has a great location in the centre of town. It has spacious, clean and well-appointed rooms (particularly on the Club Floors) and good facilities.

Breakfast is excellent with a huge choice available and all the staff are friendly and well-meaning.

For those wishing to go and see the pandas - recommend that you avoid the hotel bus and ask the concierge to arrange a ataxi to take you there (25 mins) and wait for you. Expect a total cost of around 150 RMB!

I would recommend this place for business trips and weekend breaks.
